That's mind boggling that Canada only managed 2 airports in the top 30. Goes to show you how government taxation of an industry can completely stifle its ability to prosper.

And a small population in a massive country that requires many airports as driving distances to another airport are just not feasible.

@isaidso @higgerbigger our airports just are so expensive it can be up to 32 times cheaper to fly from the U.S. to somewhere else. The gov't isn't nice to Airport Authorities.

@JorgeGt Madrid Barajas is currently seeing a passengers decline, unlike Istanbul Ataturk which is growing at a rate of 20% per year.

That argument is used often, but doesn't hold up. The truth is only a handful of Canadian airports have anything resembling good connections. Maybe 7-8 tops. If you want to fly most places, you have to use one of them. Besides, most Canadians live very close to one of these airports. We should have one-ninth their traffic due to having one-ninth their population, but we don't. Canadian PAX is about 50-80% below what one would expect if we were to mirror US air travel behaviour.

Air travel in Canada is expensive due to huge taxes and dues levied by the government. That's why the numbers are so low.

Exactly! It speaks volumes that millions of Canadians have resorted to driving to a US airport to board a plane. The Canadian government treat airports as their own private bank account rather than an engine of economic growth.

Look at Trudeau airport in Montreal. It's in the most densely populated corridor in the nation and only gets 13.5 million passengers. 4 million people live Montreal; their PAX should be double where it is, or around 27 million.

I posted an article about this problem in the Canadian aviation thread about this very problem recently. The government needs to rethink how it taxes and levies rent on airports. The extra charges are way too high.

US carriers use a hub network to make flights economical rather than fly everywhere direct nonstop. Atlanta is a major hub for Delta. For example, if someone on the East Coast needs to go to the West Coast, she might need to transit in Atlanta if a direct nonstop is not available.

China's aviation industry is growing at an astronomical rate thanks to rising affluence and a huge middle class. Thus, both domestic and international travel are growing rapidly. Note that Shanghai's 2 airports (PVG, SHA) add up to almost as much as Beijing.

Many airports in the list are primary hubs of major airlines.....Atlanta (Delta), DFW (American), Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), Istanbul Ataturk (Turkish) and so on.....So the transit passengers that pass through these big hubs actually get added to the count.....One problem I have seen for ages in these rankings is that O/D passengers are treated the same as transit passengers and there has till date been no attempt to get the 2 numbers separately!!!
