City to get a mud track, cricket pitch soon

Quote:
Harigovind Mangalore:

Multi-purpose ground to come up in St Aloysius College

The work on a new multi-purpose ground is in full swing at St Aloysius College. The ground will have a centre cricket pitch and a 300-metre mud-track.

The new ground would be a boon for the players and sports lovers in a city like Mangalore, where the sports is suffering a setback with lack of ground facilities. Once the work on the ground finishes, it will be possible to conduct cricket as well as athletic meets here.

The ground will have an effective drainage system which helps the water to drain quickly during the rainy season. The ground works are partly funded by University Grants Commission (UGC). Speaking to Deccan Herald, St Aloysius College Principal Fr Swebert D’Silva said that the work will be finished before the onset of monsoon. He said that the ground could also be used for football and hockey matches.

The college has already built five concrete cricket pitches for practice at one end of the ground. Once the centre wicket gets ready for play, the College can host Karnataka State Cricket Association’s (KSCA) matches including first division league matches, school and University matches.

Currently, in Dakshina Kannada district, KSCA matches are conducted only at Nehru Maidan in City and in NITK ground at Surathkal, which is located on the outskirts of city. Lack of pitches in city limits is the main problem KSCA Mangalore Zone is facing in conducting the matches.

“We hope that we could host few of the first division matches and other school, college tournaments, once the ground is ready,” said St Aloysius College Physical Education Director Donnet D’Souza.

If the required specifications could be satisfied, the City can even witness national and State-level athletic meets at its heart in St Aloysius College ground.
DHNS

Any idea anyone whether any college has come up with solar or wind energy project like NITK.

Builder gives Rs. 4 cr to college in Mangalore

Quote:
Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly N. Yogish Bhat said on Wednesday that a new building for the Government First Grade College on Car Street was being built on the college premises by a donor at an estimated cost of Rs. 4 crore.

Mr. Yogish Bhat told presspersons on the sidelines of udyog mela that the donor, P. Dayananda Pai, who is a builder in Bangalore, was constructing the building for the college.

The Government hadn ot provided any grant for the building, he said. He said that the ground plus two-floor building was being built in 16,000 sq. ft. area. It would have 24 rooms. He said he had also requested Mr. Pai to construct classrooms and a hall for D.Ed. students at Balmatta. It might cost Rs. 1 crore.

Hanging bridge

Mr. Bhat said that plans were afoot to construct a hanging bridge across the Phalguni at Sulthan Bathery. Civil work consultancy would be provided by the National Institute of Technology – Surathkal.

The cost of the bridge had been estimated at Rs. 12 crore. Of the estimated cost, the Government had sanctioned Rs. 4 crore.
TOI

Government helping private colleges to have facilities like swimming pool, etc. And private companies helping government colleges to build facilites. Good that they are helping each other.

That means for Sultan Battery bridge money is not yet released but sanctioned.

ZP to raise gardens in 500 schools

Quote:
‘Vegetables and fruits grown will supplement the meals of children'

Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat K.N. Vijay Prakash said on Wednesday that the panchayat would raise gardens in 500 government schools in the district. If the schools did not have compound walls, they would be built through donors.

He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a training programme in terrace gardening here. He said that the district had 800 children who lacked nutrition. If vegetables and fruits were grown in the gardens, they would supplement the meals of schoolchildren.

He said the panchayat had planned to construct parks in taluk headquarters in the district for people with disabilities. The process of identifying land for the purpose was in progress.

Mr. Prakash urged those participating in the programme to take up terrace gardening. They could grow vegetables and fruits in the space available, he said.

He said that the area under farming in the district was shrinking because of various reasons. Children in urban areas were not being exposed to farming. Terrace gardening would also give them an idea of farming and greenery.

Rajendra Hegde, Director, Garden City Farmers' Association, Bangalore, who was one of the resource persons, said that bushy plants should be kept in the centre of the terrace while pots of fruits, creepers and drooping plants should be kept on the sides.

Mr. Hegde said that in summer, plants should be watered twice in the morning and evening and in winter once, either in the morning or evening. He said that plants should not be watered during the day.

Mr. Hegde, who was also project leader at Vittal Mallya Scientific Research Foundation, Bangalore, said that ants would not damage plants. “Ants are not pests they are only a nuisance,” he said.

He said that coconut water acted as a rich nutrient to plants. They did attracted ants. If people could tolerate ants, they could feed plants with coconut water.

Mr. Hegde said that coconut coir fibre pots were available in the market. There was no need to pin holes into such pots for de-watering. These pots absorbed water. Plants would spread their roots in these pots easily. These pots were best for terrace gardening. Their durability was two years.

In addition, expandable grow bags were available. Soil-less growing material was also available for terrace gardening. Mr. Hegde said that 50 varieties of vegetables could be grown through terrace gardening.

He said it was advisable to rotate crops.

For example, after growing brinjal in a pot, beans could be grown next.

The Department of Horticulture and Siri Totagarike Sangha organised the training programme.

NGO will press for ward committees

Quote:
MANGALORE: Namma Mane Namma Ooru, a non-government organization (NGO) is planning to file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Karnataka high court against the delay in setting up ward committees .

A government order to this effect was passed 15 years ago and the NGO has been fighting the cause for the past five years.

The NGO has already served final notices to chief secretary, principal secretary, urban development department, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner and MCC commissioner. It will convene a meeting of like-minded persons and organizations at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan on Sunday to discuss future plans including proceeding with PIL if the officials do not act.

Stating that the government order has not been implemented for the past 15 years, BS Chandru, chief coordinator of the NGO, told reporters here on Thursday that the proposed meeting on Sunday would involve people of all walks of life including senior citizens, social activists and others. "We want to seek ideas and suggestions on how the authorities can be made to implement the government order to form ward committees in all the 60 wards in the city," he said.

The ward committees ensure that the urban local bodies (ULBs) enlist the support and participation of citizens in chalking out and implementing various development works envisaged by ULBs.
TOI

If I remember correctly setting up of ward level committees was a electoral promise through manifesto by all parties. It is sad that they are not keeping up their promise.

'14 years on, ward committees still a dream'
Is MCC Council avoiding setting up of ward committees?
