As for the KAT: According to this source, around 50 % of the tunnel have been excavated so far and the first breakthrough is expected to happen next year.

Yesterday a huge delegation of seven infrastructure ministers and EU's commissioner for traffic celebrated the construction start of BBT's main tunnel on the Austrian side:

Good news for the Semmering Base Tunnel. The Federal Administrative Court earlier today has rejected all appeals which means construction can finally start for good. According to the judges the public interest in the project outweighs every single argument brought to the court by the appellants by far.

Thank god! This tunnel should have been built years ago. All those appeals were mostly BS, I mean the autobahntunnel was built without even so much as a wimper compared to this project.

As sad as it sounds but we must be thankful that our great patriarch Kaiser Erwin von und zu Niederösterreich changed his mind about the project in recent years, else this would still not happen for another decade

Years? More like two decades ago.

The first plans for the Semmering Tunnel were made around 1950.

I wonder when Der Standard and its anti-ÖBB-commissioner will publish their reaction onto this court decision.

Base Tunnel Construction Equipment

Has this forum about the BBT, KAT and SBT moved somewhere else? There has not been any posts for many months - surely there must be more material to post somewhere out there?

Brenner Basis Tunnel (BBT)

I can add a little bit more about the TBM on the BBT northern contract that somebody had enquired about.
Brenner Basis Tunnel (BBT), Exploratory Tunnel, Ahrental-Pfons - Strabag/Salini-Impregilo jv (C) - Herrenknecht TBM Open Gripper S-932 8.00 m x 15 000 m (9/15~_/1x)
No photos of work in behind the TBM and its trailing Backup sections, so it is difficult to tell if the TBM is getting its supplies in by 900 mm gauge tunnel construction railway. Does anyone know about this?

Most of the other work so far has been by Drill+Blast. The exception was for the exploratory tunnel at the Southern end. The boring face of the TBM used here when new was painted up in Italian national colours, but later this was mistakenly shown as the TBM when announcing the northern end contract. The Herrenknecht used there from September 2015 was painted a more sombre neutral white.
Galleria di Base del Brennero (BBT), Exploratory Tunnel, Aicha-Mules - ATI ATB=Pizzarotti-Condotte jv (C) - SELI/Wirth TBM-DoubleShield TB630 E/TS #0630.118 6.3 m od x 10 000 m (_/08~_/10)
This section of the project had a 900 mm gauge tunnel construction railway.

The BBT website is recommended, even if a little slow to update.

KORALM Tunnel

For the KAT3 section now underway the webcam site from ÖBB Infrastruktur AG: Koralmtunnel is recommended http://kat3.netzcam.net/ and this does show the 900 mm gauge tunnel construction railway being used with the TBM here.
ÖBB Infrastruktur AG, Koralmtunnel (KAT) Baulos 3 Western Section - Porr (C) - North Tube: Herrenknecht TBM EPB-MixShield S-857 9.955 m od x 12 600 m; South Tube: Ream by D+B/NATM existing exploratory tunnel x 7 600 m and new D+B/NATM x 3 300 m (11/12~_/1x)

Hope to hear some more about the progress of the SBT also?

Brenner base tunnel consortium selected
Wednesday, March 16, 2016

BRENNER Basistunnel (BBT), which is responsible for building the 64km €8.8bn tunnel under the Brenner pass between Italy and Austria, has selected a consortium led by Astaldi to build the Italian section at a cost of around €1bn

This involves construction of the exploration tunnel and two running tunnels totalling 23km using traditional tunnelling techniques, and 46km of bored tunnels. The work is expected to take seven years to complete

I was wondering if there are any proposals for a tunnel going north from Innsbruck towards Munich?

No. Because any cost-benefit-ratio for such a tunnel would be abysmally low.

The most likely route for such a tunnel would connect the Telfs region on the Arlberg railway with the existing railroad in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with a length of about 20 km. The total distance for Innsbruck -> Telfs -> Garmisch -> Munich would then be 148 km. The current route via Kufstein -> Rosenheim is 170 km long, and a large section is, or will be, suitable for 220 km/h and have four tracks ensuring high capacity. To invest in excess of 5 billion euros for such a small benefit is out of the question.

Base Tunnel Construction Equipment

Brenner Basis Tunnel (BBT)

More info to hand about the TBM on the BBT northern contract.
Brenner Basis Tunnel (BBT), Exploratory Tunnel, Ahrental-Pfons - Strabag/Salini-Impregilo jv (C) - Herrenknecht TBM Open Gripper S-932 8.00 m x 15 000 m (9/15~_/1x)
The contractors for this section have ordered MineARC TunnelSAFE Refuge Chambers mounted on Herrenknecht's Multi-Service-Vehicles (MSV) which run on pneumatic rubber tires, so it would seem that the construction railway option has been ruled out for this phase.

KORALM Tunnel (KAT3)

One of the Schöma D60 man-riders with a Schöma CFL350DCL in the far right background.

For the KAT3 section now underway the 900 mm gauge tunnel construction railway being used with the TBM here will also have MineARC TunnelSAFE Refuge Chambers mounted on MSD railway rolling stock hauled by Schöma model type D60 man-rider railcars. These have capability of being driven remotely from within the Refuge Chambers in the event of an emergency.

For powering the trains supplying segments and materials to the TBM back-up, the contractors Porr have obtained a number of refurbished tunnel locomotives of Schöma model types CFL200DCL and CFL350DCL, some of which Porr have used on earlier base tunnel projects.

The amount of delay for the SBT is unbelievable. Basically it should be up and running for over a decade already.

And it would be also somewhat more direct.
But we all know who to thank for it.
