Marriott At Miami WorldCenter Is Actually A Thing, And Huge

http://blog.buzzbuzzhome.com/

Quote:
Holy Crap, while Curbed Miami was sleeping in to a respectable hour, other news outlets were getting their grubby little paws all over the news that the rumored 'Marriott At Miami Worldcenter' is actually a thing. Yep people, this planned massive tower's got 500,000 square feet of convention space and an 1,800 room Marriott Hotel on top. About to be purchased from the Miami Worldcenter peeps by some other peeps, the land - now currently the site of Grand Central Park - is now under the control of MDM Group, which will privately finance the project, although it will still be connected to the Miami Worldcenter megadevelopment when (and if) that on again, off again fantasyland of a city gets built.

The design, by architects Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates (they of the 'accidental' leak earlier this year) appears to be a rather sleek looking towering rectangle, with swoopy arms reaching out across the site. Oh, and it will be connected via skybridge to the new All Aboard Florida train station downtown, which it is adjacent to.

MDM Group plans for convention center, Marriott hotel tower

Quote:
MDM Group announced yesterday it has a contract to build a tower with a 500,000-square-foot convention space below a 1,800-room hotel to be managed by Marriott, the Miami Herald reported.

The site at 700 North Miami Avenue is currently Grand Central Park and under the control of MDM Group, which intends to privately finance the project. Coral Gables-based Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates is designing the tower, the Herald said. Marriott at Miami Worldcenter will be connected to the next-door All Aboard Florida train station by a skybridge. MDM and Miami World Center principals have declined to provide the project’s estimated cost, the newspaper said.

As previously reported, Marriott won a case against the owners of Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach late last year. Eden Roc had accused Marriott of mismanaging a Renaissance Hotel Management unit. Marriott subsequently sued Eden Roc, claiming they were attempting a hostile takeover of the hotel.

Here's The Inside Of Downtown's Future Convention Center

Quote:
If all goes well, this will be the splashy new interior of Downtown's future convention center and 1800 room Marriott at Miami Worldcenter - making it South Florida's biggest hotel. (Take that Fontainebleau!) This image, and the one after the jump, flashed across our screens in the YouTube video the developers, MDM Group, used to announce the project. But apparently they put it together in a report as well, and gave that report to someone who somehow snuck it off to the exMiami people, where it was leaked, wham: the snazzy interior of a convention center that is totally way more beautiful than the current Miami Beach Convention Center, although at just half the size. So, it won't be holding any of the really, really big Art Basel/Boat Show type shows anytime soon.

These days, it's pretty rare for a new large hotel to come up anywhere in the world. The new Marriott Miami World Center would be one of the largest hotels to exist outside Las Vegas. In fact, it should have been another Marriott Marquis (after the ones in Atlanta, NYC, and Washington DC).

Miami WorldCenter

A $4 billion mix of convention, hotel, shopping and residences. Renders for much of the development are still preliminary.

Worldcenter mall project could draw Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s

Quote:
Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are in talks to take up space at the Miami Worldcenter’s proposed 750,000-square-foot Downtown mall, sources told the South Florida Business Journal.

Miami Worldcenter Associates is working to secure retailers with Palm Beach Gardens-based developer Forbes Company and Taubman Centers, which have jointly developed several shopping centers and have ties to Macy’s. Macy’s serves as the flagship at their Mall at Millenia in Orlando.

The Miami City Commission approved the Worldcenter project in 2008, when it was meant to be a mix of hotel, retail, residential and office space totaling 11 million-plus square feet, as reported at the time. Plans right now are retail-heavy, though the former Miami Arena site might be developed by the MDM Group as a Marriott Hotel and convention center.

Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s sign Worldcenter leases

Quote:
November 20, 2013 10:30AM

The Miami Worldcenter team has landed flagship retail tenants for its massive downtown Miami project, The Real Deal has learned.

Macy’s and upscale sister department store chain Bloomingdale’s have signed leases to open stores once the 750,000-square-foot retail component of Worldcenter is completed, industry sources said. The Worldcenter principals and retailers plan to announce the transaction within the next few weeks.

Securing leases with Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s is a major coup for Worldcenter. The project site is located between the transformative Brickell CityCentre development under construction in Miami’s financial district and Midtown Miami.

CityCentre developer Swire Properties has formed a partnership with the Whitman family, which built and owns the Bal Harbour Shops, for the retail component of that $1.1 billion project. No retail tenants have been announced by the partnership.

The Worldcenter lease represents Bloomingdale’s first foray into downtown Miami.

This is such a cool project. Good to see that tenants appear to think the same.

Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s Confirm Plans To Open At Worldcenter

Quote:
Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s revealed plans today to open at Miami Worldcenter.

Macy’s will occupy 195,000 square feet, with Bloomingdale’s taking 120,000 at a new retail center that will be built by Taubman Centers and The Forbes Company.

Construction is expected to begin by late 2014, and the stores are planning to open by late 2016.

Taubman and Forbes will be acquiring 10 acres from Art Falcone’s Miami Worldcenter Associates to build the 750,000 square foot retail center.

Major Urban Mall Coming To Miami Worldcenter

Quote:
ExMiami announces that the Mall at Miami Worldcenter, which mall operators Taubman Centers and the Forbes Company are building at the upcoming Miami Worldcenter megaproject, will be 750,000 square feet of retail smooched into four blocks (actually three regular blocks and a sliver of a fourth) directly behind the Biscayne Wall , that line of condo towers on Biscayne Boulevard. Downtown Miami will have yet another urban mall to rival that of Brickell CityCentre. Macy's and Bloomingdale's have already signed up to be the mall's anchor tenants.

Little late here, but Downtown Miami actually already has a JW Marriot Marquis a couple blocks south of this project that opened in 2010.

No offense, but that "JW Marriott Marquis" only has like, what, 300 guest rooms? Should have been just a "JW Marriott" hotel. Only one other "JW Marriott Marquis" property exists; in Dubai, and that has 1,600 guest rooms in two towers.

These "Marriott Marquis" properties are usually those 1,000-plus guest-room properties, and there are only five "Marriott Marquis" properties in existence (in the three cities I already mentioned, plus San Francisco and San Diego), with a sixth under development in Houston. The new Marriott in Miami should have easily been under the "Marriott Marquis" brand, and not "JW Marriott Marquis".

If there's a "JW Marriott" brand and a "Marriott Marquis" brand, then how come there exists a "JW Marriott Marquis" brand?

Miami Worldcenter Quietly Reveals New Website, Renders

Quote:
Miami Worldcenter has gone public with updated renderings and a new website. And by public we mean the website went live and somehow exMiami found out, with not a press release or launch party yet in sight. The new renders show an updated master plan with a multilevel mall along the project's eastern side, a new jumble of towers, a tall rotunda-atrium thing made of suspended walkways, Bloomingdales, amenity decks, the convention hotel on the far end, etc. The site has a presentation with more info (PDF!), annnnnnnnnd, nails a groundbreaking of 'late 2014' for the whole shebang.
