DUBAI | The Lagoons | ~500m x 2 | ~1650ft x 2 | Canceled

The Lagoons was a low density scheme, planned around 7 islands carved out of land at the end of Dubai Creek. The project was set to include Dubai's first opera house and the proposed Dubai Towers - Dubai, project. However, during the recession, the project was put on the back burner and completely forgotten about by the developer; Dubai Properties.

The project has now been revived and is set to be built under a JV partnership with Emaar.

The press release has indicated that the project will now also be home to the next world's tallest building, which will rise to over 1,000m. No other details have been released yet, but I thought it was worth having a thread for this

Dubai Holding revives Lagoons

Published Sunday, May 19, 2013

Dubai Holding, a global investment holding company, has confirmed to Emirates 24l7 that it is reviving “The Lagoons” project on Dubai Creek through a joint venture.

“Dubai Holding confirms its commitment to revive The Lagoons project. We will be working jointly with another real estate developer to deliver the project. Details on the project will be announced in due course,” a company spokesperson said.

Earlier, UAE Arabic newspaper Al Bayan, quoting unnamed sources, said Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties, Dubai's largest developer, will jointly develop ‘The Lagoons’ project.

The master development, the newspaper release said, is set to be home to a 1,000-metre tower.

If the companies do go ahead with the development, this will be their second jointly launched initiative, after the announcement of Mohammed Bin Rashid City, the master development that will include the world’s biggest mall, a theme park with collaboration with Universal Studios and a park larger than London’s 350-acre Hyde Park.

It's unlikely to be that design as that was proposed by Nakheel and its proposed location was on the other side of the city

As a side note, on the northern fring of the development is where the world's longest arching bridge was also proposed back in 2008.....

Dubai plans to build the world's longest arch bridge at a cost of 3 billion dirhams ($816.9 million), the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Tuesday.

The RTA said it would take four years to construct the mega-bridge, which will measure 1,600 metres with an arch 205 metres high and 667 metres long.

Once complete the bridge will overtake the Lupu Bridge in Shanghai as the longest in the world.

The Lupu measures 3,900 metres with an arch span of 550 metres. The span is the most common way to rank arch bridges, so if one bridge has a longer span than another it does not mean the bridge is longer from shore to shore or anchorage to anchorage.

The bridge connects the Bur Dubai and Deira areas of the city and will be the sixth creek crossing. Currently the five Dubai Creek crossings are Al Shindagha Tunnel, Al Maktoum Bridge, the Floating Bridge, Al Garhoud Bridge and Business Bay Crossing.

At 64 metres wide, the bridge will accommodate 12 lanes of traffic and a metro line running down its centre.

The bridge will also include a metro station, an abra station and the manmade island on which an opera house will be constructed.

Mattar Al Tayer, executive director of the RTA, said the sixth crossing was one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by the RTA.

"The project aims at easing traffic flow between the two banks of Dubai Creek and serve the new property developments," Al Tayer said.

The RTA is currently investing around $22 billion in Dubai's transport infrastructure as it looks to reduce congestion.

The investment plan allocates $12 billion for new roads, $2.5 billion each for marine transport and tram systems, $6.3 billion for the Dubai Metro and $600 million for new buses.

I'd prefer a revival of Dubai Towers over a 1km tower. Or maybe both, that would be ideal.

I don't understand how they can propose these massive towers and expect to fill them all with tenants. Surely it's an obvious property bubble? Just look at China and what's happening there.

There'll probably be a placeholder first, if they had chosen a design it would have been in the news.

You're right. It appears to be too much, too soon once more, although I think the optimisim surrounding a potential winning bid for the 2020 World Expo may be fuelling things.

The IMF is already concerned: http://www.foxbusiness.com/news/2013...operty-market/

Yes, you're probably right, unless ofcourse the Dubai Towers design is souped up so that the tallest of the "dancing flames" is stretched upwards to 1,000m
