BUTUAN | Puregold Hypermarket [com|u/c]

Post away guys

Puregold may surpass 200-store goal this year

MANILA -- Puregold Price Club Inc. has accelerated its expansion plans as it aims to build 25 more stores this year and enter the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

"The target is to open 25 stores in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao within the year," Antonio E. de los Santos, national operations manager at Puregold, said in a briefing in Pasay City on Wednesday.

De los Santos said the retail chain currently operates 185 stores including acquisitions, all located in Luzon.

If the firm becomes successful in attaining its target for the year, it may already surpass its 200-store-target originally set for 2015.

Aida B. de Guzman, senior vice president at Puregold, said the company has set aside P3 billion for the 25 new stores.

In the next three months, Puregold will be opening three new stores in the Davao region: one in Digos city (Davao del Sur) in June, another in Tagum (Davao del Norte) in July, and one in Davao City come August, she said.

"We also have construction ongoing in Cagayan de Oro city (Misamis Oriental), Butuan city (Agusan del Norte) and Bacolod city (Negros Occidental)," de Guzman added.

Meanwhile, the retail giant also expects to complete its conversion of its acquired Parco stores into Puregold outlets within the year. Out of 19 Parco stores, 14 units have already been converted into Puregold outlets.

The aggressive expansion is being undertaken by the retail giant amid strong consumer spending in the country and the abundance of traditional retailers or sari-sari stores across the Philippines.

"The strategy is to focus on sari-sari stores... Sari-sari stores in the Philippines are about 1 million so that's the potential we're looking at," de los Santos said.

"The traditional retailer still controls about 75% of the retail market, so there's still opportunity for a structured retailer like Puregold," he continued.

About 30% to 35% of Puregold's customers are made up of sari-sari store and other small business owners.

Puregold boasts of 240,000 members under its "Tindahan ni Aling Puring" program, which is the "strongest" sari-sari store program among retailers in the country, de los Santos said.

Puregold ended March 2013 with a net income of P962 million, more than double what it earned in the same period last year, amid strong sales, continuous expansion, and new acquisitions.

De Guzman said the retailer is confident it will not be hurt by newly-established stores such as FamilyMart and Wellcome.

"We believe we already have the number and these are only start-ups so we have already protected ourselves," she said.

PUREGOLD BUTUAN
Chronology of Events

- Mancao Supermarket is one of the oldest retailers of dry goods in Butuan. Owned by the prominent and generous Mancao family, it is located in between the busy streets of San Jose and Marcos Calo, right across Mancao Square, a building which also houses the Mancao department store.

- Rumors of Puregold's buy-out of the Mancao Supermarket building spread in 2012.

- Negotiations between the management of Puregold and Mancao for the buy-out of the Mancao Supermarket building also began last year.

- It was also rumored that the deal didn't turn out well and that Puregold might be eyeing another prime property in Butuan -- the vacated Otis Mall building in the populous Barangay Libertad.

- However, it was later confirmed by Mancao employees that PUREGOLD bought the building and that they will be ceasing operations in 2013 to give way for PUREGOLD.

- Mancao Supermarket after many years of serving the Butuan market, finally ceased operations last March. The building was closed down.

- Butuan City Mayor Jun Amante in his thanksgiving speech broke the silence and confirmed Puregold's entry.

Puregold Butuan Press Releases

Puregold to open three stores in Mindanao

Retailer Puregold Price Club, Inc. is set to open three more stores in Mindanao in the next few months as it seeks expansion outside Luzon.

According to Aida de Guzman, Puregold senior vice president, the three branches will be in Davao provinces — the Digos branch will open in June, the Tagum branch in July, and the Davao City branch in August.

“What we are doing is taking an opportunistic approach to growth and looking at Mindanao and the Visayas to see what is feasible,” De Guzman said Wednesday at a briefing after the opening of the firm’s Tindahan ni Aling Puring Sari-Sari Store Convention 2013 at the World Trade Center in Pasay.

She added they will be opening 25 more stores within the year, bringing its network to 200. Puregold has set its capital expenditures at P3 billion for the new stores.

Other areas that have been identified for new stores are Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and Bacolod City.

Puregold’s net income surged 105.3 percent in the first quarter of the year, or to P962 million from P69 million in the same period last year as its consolidated sales grew. — KBK, GMA News

Puregold to build 25 stores

Supermarket chain operator Puregold Price Club Inc. said Wednesday it will pursue its nationwide expansion, despite the entry of two new foreign retailers in the local market.

“We’re not at all worried. We have the numbers and we have a very strong promotional program through the Tindahan ni Aling Puring livelihood program,” Puregold senior vice president Aida de Guzman said.

De Guzman said Puregold would remain competitive despite the entry of Hong Kong’s supermarket chain Wellcome and Japan’s largest convenience store chain Family Mart, which were expected to have their own slice of the local retail market.

De Guzman said the new entrants were just “start-up” companies that were not as well-equipped compared to local retail chains that had years or decades of operating advantage.

“Our prices compared to any other retailers are very competitive. In fact, we can say that we have the lowest price range among other supermarkets and groceries,” she said.

Puregold is spending P3 billion this year for a 25-store expansion program in 2013, including the opening of six new stores in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Puregold plans to put up more outlets in VisMin

SUPERMARKET chain operator Puregold Price Club Inc., led by businessman Lucio Co, is on the lookout for more sites where it can put up Puregold stores in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Puregold Senior Vice President Aida de Guzman said this is in keeping with the company’s “mission” of complementing small businesses such as neighborhood corner stores and eateries all over the country.

“We hope that other provinces would be able to benefit from our programs,” said de Guzman at the sidelines of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of its Aling Puring Sari-Sari Store Program in Pasay City.

On its web site, the company said the Aling Puring Sari-Sari store program was made especially for Puregold’s primary customers: the owners of neighborhood corner stores, eateries and bulk buyers/wholesalers. Currently, the program has 240,000 members.

Members of this program get up to 3-percent rebate on Puregold purchases. De Guzman said members are also given seminars and training programs.

Under the sari-sari store program, Puregold helps aspiring business owners open up stores that suit their budget, provide trainings to equip them with their entrepreneurial skills and bridges them to micro-financing institutions.

As of May, Puregold has 185 branches in Luzon and is set to open 25 more this year, including new branches in the Visayas and Mindanao. The company has earlier announced that it is spending P3 billion to construct the additional 25 Puregold stores this year.

The company will open branches in five cities in Mindanao—Digos, Davao, Tagum, Cagayan de Oro and Butuan. Another branch will be opened in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental. The company is targeting to put up 200 stores before 2015.

In its first quarter 2013 disclosure, Puregold’s consolidated net profit increased by 105.3 on year to P962 million, almost double its profit during the same period last year.

Puregold’s first quarter profit was attained as its consolidated net sales grew by 49.8 percent to P16.09 billion. The company’s net profit margin also improved to 6 percent from 4.4 percent posted in 2012.

The 49.8-percent growth in consolidated net sales for the quarter was mainly due to the 18.2-percent rise in sales turnover of the 159 Puregold and Parco stores operating as of end-March. The six S&R membership clubs and the 15 Company E-stores accounted for 16.4 percent and 1 percent, respectively, of the consolidated net sales.

Puregold traces success to ‘Aling Puring’ promo

Puregold Priceclub Inc, is tracing its success- 185 stores in 15 years- to its entrepreneurship promotion program – ‘Tindahan ni Aling Puring’.

The marketing program offering discounts for variety store owners has enabled the supermarket chain to grab a quarter of the more than 1 million variety store owners in the Philippines.

Puregold, according to Aida de Guzman, company senior vice president said the program has attracted some 240,000 members from Luzon alone, a big jump from 10,000 ten years ago.

Puregold also has the “Kaindustriya” program that offers kitchen/food solutions for operators of carinderias to restaurants.

At the anniversary event yesterday, Puregold launched its “credit line” for ‘Tindahan ni Aling Puring’ members by giving them access to Metrobank credit card.

Credit they can use buying more goods from Puregold .

De Guzman said the program has enabled small entrepreneurs “brand” their stores, guaranteeing the lowest price to their consumers and giving the storeowners access to various promos, discounts and rebates.

Puregold plans to spend P3 billion on 25 more stores this year, including its first ventures out of Luzon.

This will put the company ahead of its goal to hit 200 stores by 2014, ending 2013 with 215 stores from the current 185, all based in Luzon.

De Guzman, said Puregold will open five stores in Mindanao this year, three of which will be in Davao province, and one in Bacolod, its first in the Visayas.

All of these new outlets will be full stores or Price Clubs.

First to open among the Davao stores will be one in Digos, set for next month.

Puregold will open in Tagum in July and in Davao City in August.

Under construction are stores in Cagayan de Oro, Butuan and in Bacolod.

De Guzman said Puregold also continues to look for opportunities to acquire existing grocery chains and or their assets, especially those in the provinces as part of its expansion.

The company targets to complete within the year the conversion of 19 outlets of Parco supermarket chain which it acquired last year. Fifteen have so far been converted.

The acquisition of assets of other chains and independent stores has enabled Puregold to expand its footprint. For one, Puregold requires huge spaces.

Aside from Parco, Puregold has also acquired S&R. Other acquisitions are Eunilane and Grocer E and most recently Sioland and BHF which is based in Pangasinan.

Puregold has three formats: the full store or the Price Club which requires 3,000 square meters; Junior, a neighborhood store which requires 1,000 sqm, and the smallest, Extra which carries a limited number of items.

De Guzman said Puregold is unfazed by competition even as the country attracts new players in retail such as Wellcome supermarkets of Hong Kong and Family Mart convenience stores.

About 75 percent of retail sales in the Philippines are from the traditional formats like sari-sari stores and public markets.

“There is still a lot of market because the economy is growing,” said Antonio delos Santos, vice president for operations of Puregold.

Puregold, Metrobank launch credit card for sari-sari stores

MANILA, Philippines - Supermarket chain Puregold Price Club Inc. has teamed up with Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. to launch a credit card which will be available for sari-sari store owners.

Puregold vice president for operations Antonio de los Santos, in a press conference during Puregold’s Sari-Sari Store Convention held at the World Trade Center, said the move is intended to help the firm’s primary customers, the sari-sari store owners.

He said the credit cards can be used to purchase goods from Puregold stores and other commercial establishments.

“It’s a regular credit card they (sari-sari store owners) can use everywhere, but we are just giving them the opportunity to get their own credit card,” he said.

He noted that it is difficult for some individuals to get their own credit cards as they are unable to meet the requirements set by banks.

De los Santos said while sari-sari store owners’ applications for credit cards will still require the evaluation of their capacity to pay the bank, the process is expected to be made easier as Puregold can provide the bank the credit history of applicants through the record of purchases that were made in their stores.

Through the initiative, sari-sari store owners will be able to have access to credit.

In the same event, Aida de Guzman, Puregold senior vice president for business development, said the firm is set to open three stores in Mindanao starting next month in line with its aim of having 25 new outlets or a total of 200 outlets this year.

She said the three stores will be located in Digos in Davao del Sur, Tagum in Davao del Norte and Davao City.

She also said the company is set to open stores in Cagayan de Oro and Butuan as well as in Bacolod City in Negros Occidental this year.

“We are looking for other areas in Visayas and Mindanao,” she said noting that the company sees opportunities in these areas.

Most of the company’s stores are located in Luzon.

In the first quarter, Puregold opened nine new stores out of the initial target of 25 new branches for the year in Luzon.

Of the 19 newly-acquired Parco stores, the firm has already converted 14 into Puregold stores, and the rest are expected to complete its renovation this year.

Despite the entry of foreign retailers in the Philippine market such as Hong Kong’s Wellcome and Japan’s Family Mart, De Guzman said the firm is upbeat that it can continue to grow here given the rising economy as well as the huge number of sari-sari stores in the country.
