it's about time something sleek and modern rose here. It's a shame One Madison will likely not see the light of day.

That tower still gives me goosebumps. Such a shame it won't be built!

If they built that as it is, without changing the design that would just be incredible.

I'm still holding out hope that someone someday decides to top off the Met Life North Tower to anchor Midtown South with something huge and beautiful, but I do love these thin spindly towers rising around the iconic clocktower.

I agree about the design changing. Liebeskind has had a terrible track record putting up skyscrapers and the mess at nearby One Madison Park is enough to give any developer cold feet about starchitects with daring designs.

The design of that building is much more impressive that it's height, 937 is tall but if they just build a 937 foot box that would be kind of disappointing.

I thought I saw where YIMBY said this building "likely won't be built this cycle" on one of his updates.

If the market is hot, like it is right now, why will they wait?

While initially I like the libeskind design, I agree what ever will rise would be different. I think my preference would be a nice limestoner that would obviously fit very nice.

A new clearer rendering released for 45 East 22nd Street.

Cantilevering Flatiron Tower Reveals New Render, More Details
http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...re_details.php

Quote:
Preliminary renderings of Ian Bruce Eichner's cantilevering Flatiron condo tower were revealed in April, but now there's an official, this-is-definitely-what-it-will-look-like rendering (click for big), sent straight to Curbed from the marketing team. The new rendering shows that the building, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, has a five-story stone base and a tapering glass tower that gets slightly wider as it gets taller. Located between Broadway and Park Avenue South, the tower cantilevers 17 feet over the neighbor and rises a total of 64 stories and 777 feet (previous reports had placed it from 718 to 800)—so that puts it 152 feet taller than One Madison. Reps also say that the building's official address will be 45 East 22nd Street, not 41 East 22nd Street.

In addition to the height increasing slightly, the number of condos has also increased from previous reports. There will be 83 units, not 81, and they will range from one- to four-bedrooms. No details about the interiors have been revealed, except to say that there will be "multiple amenity floors." Sales are expected to launch this fall, and the building should be ready for occupancy by 2016. Work is underway at the site, though nothing has started rising yet.

Oh thank god. That version clears up what had looked in earlier renders like a hideous blank concrete wall for the cantilever. This is much more coherent.

Here's hoping they use top quality glass.

I agree! This will be a heck of a good looking tower.

I saw it trashed in Curbed as "ugly" in reader's comments but the clear new render shows any concerns about the effect of the cantilever isn't justified. The responses there tend to be more reflexively anti development anyway when I read them. The new render as shown here really is impressive and in this area of Manhattan certainly will make for a pleasing, soaring sight with the unique angling. Unlike most towers we see built it will actually get wider on top... a nice contrast.

Unlike 217 West 57th Street, I find this ridiculous because it cantilevers over a crappy low-rise building of no architectural value by NYC standards. If somebody wants to redevelop said building, they won't be able to go tall because this toothpick is in the way.

Ones that shouldn't be taken literally, but actually do exist.

Maybe a hockey stick is a better analogy... Still, it looks more like a straight disposable toothpick than a damn champagne glass.
