Crap, I get myself mixed up on this kind of stuff -- I was thinking of how Benioff/Salesforce got the "penthouse" top floor of the Salesforce Tower.

Oceanwide Center approved!

Foster + Partner can go ahead for crystalline skyscrapers in San Francisco
http://www.dezeen.com/2016/05/12/fos...alifornia-usa/

Quote:
Foster + Partners has won planning approval for a pair of faceted glass skyscrapers in San Francisco, which will be among the tallest buildings in the city.

The pair of mixed-use blocks known connectively as the Oceanwide Centre will be located in the South of Market (SoMa) neighbourhood, where they will form part of a redevelopment scheme surrounding the Transbay Transit Center.

Yeah (finally). They've leased the lower floors:

New Waldorf Astoria Hotel In SoMa Promises To *Finally* Give SF A Taste Of Luxury (that's sarcasm if you can't tell)

San Francisco

. . . The hotel will take up the first 21 floors of this SoMa mixed-use building at First and Eckert designed by London-based Foster + Partners. Hirsch Bedner Associates will be doing the interior design. With more than 250 rooms, a quarter of them suites, the hotel will also feature several restaurants . . . .

This is really good news. Having signed a lease, they are pretty committed to go forward and I've heard of now changes to the schedule calling for construction to commence in a few months (late fall).

First I've noticed the existing buildings on the lot for this project are now vacant and boarded up:

The changing profile of San Francisco's skyline is going to be a joy to behold as these new towers rise. Congratulations to San Francisco, soon to be North America's third most impressive skyline IMHO.

Yes, I do. I'll concede that Toronto is the most transformed skyline in NA over the past decade or so but the bulk of the city's boom has been and continues to be comprised of green glass condo boxes. Also, every time a supertall is proposed Toronto City Council or one of the ratepayers/citizens groups protests the fact that buildings create shadows and will destroy the "village feel" of their neighbourhood and shoot it down. San Francisco, on the other hand, is building fewer towers but the ones that are currently under construction, like Salesforce, will dramatically reshape the city's skyline. Of course, this is all just MHO.

You right,Toronto skyline is impressive but when we get in downtown Toronto,it different. Most condos are badly built and are ugly and cheap.San francisco is prettier. In San Francisco,Every building is cute and has style. In Toronto,it just a me matter of money and return on investment for developers. And government and clients doesn t care about architecture excellence in Canada. So developers build trash and city approve it.
Toronto is the only city that i know, where every building s challenged for height, for innovative design or disturbed lifestyle. So Toronto will sink architecturally and other cities will shine.

I'm not sure about the Marker Street side, but from the south this will definitely look great with the other new towers.

For a city with a fragile skyline and heavy NIMBY culture, I think that it doesn't blend in with the skyline at all actually. The height is actually good, but the design doesn't say "San Francisco" (even though I've never been there and would probably have my bank account drained after visiting.

Edit: I was writing that from the front page...if it's going to be built, great! Hopefully more projects will happen in that city.

San Francisco’s second-tallest building finally breaks ground

Quote:
Luo Linquan, the Chinese Consul General to San Francisco, repeated the mayor’s refrain, calling the imminent high-rises “a good model for the city’s prosperity and relationship with China.”

He added that his initial disappointment that Oceanwide wasn’t allowed to eclipse Salesforce Tower in height was mitigated upon reflecting that the world’s second-largest economy was enabling the city’s second-tallest building.

Late response, but I agree with San Francisco being high on the list of impressive skylines because it has 1) a cluster of high quality towers, like Chicago or Philadelphia 2) with the Golden Gate Bridge, a globally recognised iconic structure, like Toronto, St Louis or Seattle. The combination of the two is a recipe for perfection.
