I hope no one is in there. They like doing pranks like that at construction sites.

New hardcoreshutterbug photos

According to flickr, taken 19 hours ago.
Since hcsb is a MTA/LIRR employee this one is taken from the NE corner of the LIRR's East Rail Yard, looking south.
Lowest structure is the ramp up to 10th Ave, behind that is the inactive LIRR MoE building and then 10 HY:

Weather's getting better (forecast of lo50s today & sunny), good time for taking photos before it switches back to winter next week.

And here's a shot from a publicly-accessible 10th Ave:

They've removed the sidewalk shed from the 30th st entrance to the High Line, and there's a really nice unobstructed shot now from the staircase.

Gotcha: I assumed that was for the residential tower they built on the south side.

You've taken a FAR more interesting photo than the ones I've seen so far of the Mayor et al ceremonial subway ride to "34 Street Hudson Yards" three blocks north of your location this afternoon:

Mayor Bloomberg, MTA officials and other local leaders today took the first ride on the extension of the 7 Subway line, terminating at the new subway station located at 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue in Manhattan.

I walked by the station on the off-chance that they were going to emerge somewhere. No red carpets anywhere. They must have ridden in and out.

Yeah, that's the drift I got.

Benjamin Kabak/SecondAvenueSagas has a photo of the vent building @ 36th St in his flickr photostream today, but no "in-use" photos of the stairs/escalators between the surface and the lower mezz. AFAIK, there is NO passenger entrance at 36th; the secondary entrance will be in the basement of the moinan group Girasole tower between 34th & 35th

He did take a photo of the "SITE J -34th STREET STATION CROSS SECTION" placard when it was set up in the lower mezz. There's enough resolution that you can see that there really is a "skylight" in the upper mezz between the Hudson Blvd Park entrance/headhouse & 55 Hudson Yards.
His blog entry is here: http://secondavenuesagas.com/2013/12...ntent=FaceBook

Diagram is looking north, with the cross section slice ~halfway between 33rd & 34th St.

OSHA would have someone's head on a silver platter if there was someone inside the portable potty

If OSHA knew about all the workplace violations actually happening they would have a 20 year back log on investigation. What OSHA doesn't know won't hurt them!

But workers do get hurt & killed. For example less than two years ago that crane collapsed at the nearby #7 "34th Street Hudson Yards" subway site. One worker was killed & four injured.

"He understood the hazards, but he never thought it would happen to him," he said. "Maybe a break here and there."

Platform foundation start next to 10 HY?

ILNY from SSP took a bunch of photos of the Hudson Yard area Saturday & posted them today.

One shows what I think/guess is the first foundation for the overbuild platform being drilled.

I'm inferring the start of the first foundation for the overbuild platform from his photo. The photo captures one of the three Bauer drills now to the west of the MoE building remains, near 10 HY:

Photo is looking east from the 11th Ave viaduct; the drill I'm referencing is towards the right, aligned with the left side of the 31st canyon:

kingsc might have been referring to constructions start of the overbuild platform, which occurs within the West Side Yards railyard that the LIRR owns&uses. Southern side of the railyard is now occupied by construction & construction access for Amtrak's Gateway tunnel box, but that WSY portion will be returned to LIRR uses within two years (IIRC).

SSP's UrbanImpressionist has posted a few photos yesterday of construction progress in the south end of Hudson Yards (I'm differentiating between the Hudson Yards RE development & the MTA/LIRR WSY).

Urban impressionsist has a good vantage point in the Ohm building on the south side of 30th St.

Photo is looking ENE. If you zoom into the left side of his original high-res photo you can see into the eastern end of the Amtrak Gateway tunnel box excavation. It looks to me that they have reached bedrock in a couple of spots in that area and have a rock drill (black mast) working on the bedrock. I don't know if they will use blasting in that spot or not. The geotechnical boring plan & profile indicated rock about 20 feet below surface at the NE corner of the excavation, which seems consistent with the photo.

how far down do they have to go for the tunnel box??

we can see the filagree panels being set down on level 4, once 4 is done and 5 and 5M (mechanical) are complete, we will start to enter the typical floors.

we will also see the atrium start to take shape on the right, south, side of the building, that runs from 6 thru 22. then it should really pick up pace.

Thanks for the info.

It looks to me that the lower green line on the right (10th Ave) side of the diagram below is ~ 40 below the yard surface. But, you can probably read this diagram better than I can:
image hosted on flickr

The snip is from the 2012 tunnel box study appendix A, page 53
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...58187178,d.cWc

NYguy @ SSP posted a diagram from ThorntonTomasetti related to the platform today, maybe foundation sequencing??
His comment was "Lots of permits approved concerning platform construction."
