I read somewhere that Riyadh is one of the hottest and most pedestrian unfriendly urban environments in the world. I don't know how they would expect folks to get to the metro if not by car.
Air conditioning everywhere you find . in the metro and stations . home . ...

I'm surprised Riyadh doesn't have a subway system. For some reason I always assumed it had some sort of good public transportation network, I guess not!

The hot climate, low gas prices, and sprawled urban design makes it hard to justify a strong PT system...kinda like many US cities. But in the last few years, Arabia is seeing lots of plans. The stations look unnecessarily extravagant but I think this is a great idea regardless. Riyadh has over 5 million people and obviously not all of them have cars.

It's only the interchange stations that are flashy, but these will be handling high passenger numbers. A metro system should is part of a cities key public spaces. High quality design will act as landmarks for particular neighbourhoods, in the past it used to called civic pride.

Three consortiums bid for Riyadh Metro

http://arabnews.com/news/454574
RIYADH: ABDUL HANNAN TAGO
Monday 10 June 2013

The High Commission for Riyadh Development (HCRD) revealed Saturday that more than 80 experts from all over the world will complete a technical and financial offer analysis for the Riyadh Metro.
According to an HCRD statement, three major global consortiums submitted their technical and financial offers to the commission recently as announced.
The HCRD noted that the results of the analysis, carried out under the supervision of specialists at the commission, will be uncovered in the near future to the Supreme Committee to oversee the implementation of the public transport project in Riyadh.
The commission is chaired by Riyadh Gov. Prince Khalid bin Bandar, also the HCRD’s president, who will choose the most appropriate offer in terms of technical and financial edge.
The winning consortium will implement the mega project. According to a source from the HCRD, the metro system will have 96 air-conditioned stations in total, including the main stations, four transfer stations, and five park-and-ride stations.
The Traffic Control Center (TCC) is designed to help deliver a world-class customer service experience for the public transport system and will be the central point for customer contact. It will coordinate the whole transport network using Intelligent Transport Systems.
The system will cover the districts as follows:
Blue Line: Olyaya–Batha–Al Hayer Road (39 km);
Green Line: King Abdullah Road (25 km);
Red Line: Madina Al Munawra-Amir Saad bin Abdul Rahman Al Awal Road (40 km);
Orange Line: To King Khaled International Airport (30 km);
Yellow Line: King Abdul Aziz Road (13 km);
Purple Line: Abdul Rahman bin Ouf–Shaikh Hassan bin Hussain bin Ali (30 km).
Trains on the six lines will run at 40km/h. All stations and carriages will be air-conditioned.
The driverless electric trains will also be divided into first class, family class and single class carriages.
The completed three-line Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) network will be 85 km. The two completed circular lines will be 83 km. The 18-line community bus service will cover a total of 405 km.

That monorail is hot looking.

How long will the monorail route be and is it being considered for the heavy rail system like Sao Paulo, Chongquin, and Tokyo?

It will indeed be very short, a circular line of 3.6 km lenght on which 6 trains only travel in one direction. With 6 stations, tha means an average distance of just 600m between stops.

Chonquing and Tokyo use another System (the 'HITACHI Large'), which is quite different in many aspects and therefore incompatible.

However, on Sao Paulo's line 15, the exact same Bombardier system will be used. Trains will be nearly identical - only that Riyadh will utilize 2-car-trains consititng of two end-cars back-to-back, while in SP we will see another 5 middle cars in between those, forming altogether a 7-section unit.

To my knowledge, the system is also promoted for tenders of future lines especially in Brazil and India.

Below some pictures off the SP thread covering the test facility in Kingston, Canada. The train is the prototype of both the Riyadh and Sao Paulo System
