I have some experience with flipping houses before... Well, not exactly me, but I've seen my parents work on renovations quite a few times. I guess the best thing to do is not to move in until the house is move-in ready. Living in the house during renovations is cumbersome and most of the time the residents get in the way of the renovation so things take longer to finish and more expensive in the end.

One thing that's less ideal in a fixer-upper compared to a new construction is energy efficiency which takes a lot of money to fix. Water pipes, sewer, utilities (gas versus electric, etc.) are also considerations.
