MURCIA | TRAM

Murcia, a city in south-eastern Spain, is the capital and most populous city of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of 441.345 inhabitants in 2010 (about one third of the total population of the Region).

Brief Murcia's tram history

The first line which linked Murcia with Alcantarilla was put into service on September 2,1896.Later,two other tram lines were built between Murcia-Espinardo and Murcia-El Palmar. Finally, after almost 33 years of service, in the year 1929 was decided to remove all existing lines boosting since then the public transport with buses.

Here some historical pictures..

Sustainable public transport

The concept of a sustainable public transport as part of a wider integrated sustainable transport strategy is gaining importance nowadays all over the developped countries and above all in Europe.

Within those new strategies and challenges the city council has decided to reintroduce again the tram as a new green and sustainable means of transport.

So,in the year 2007 was put into service the first stretch(Known as Tramo 0) of 2'2 Km long and 4 tram stops. The goal of this line was to bring the people closer to this new means of transport and see its acceptance.

Here I present it to you..

The green trams come from Madrid like the blue-red ones, or have been ordered to Alstom directly??

Thanks for the answer!!

Thank goodness they have somewhere to work, because here in Madrid were taking more and more dust... too much trams for only 3 lines with a relative success.

Are they rented??

According to a message by "Desgraciao" in the Murcian section of the Spanish forum it seems that they have been finally bought.

Very stylish new system. I wonder however how well the meadow on the tracks will survive, especially during the summers.

Thanks for the comment.

Actually there isn't any meadow on the tracks,it's artificial turf.If that was natural grass it wouldn't survive probably to the Murcian hell in summer..

The tickets will can be bought in the ticket machines placed on tram stops.Inside tram I suppose that it will have several ticket cancellers.Furthermore,in the line 1 some ticket inspectors will work to catch
free riders.I think that system is widely used in the most tram systems in Europe and around the world..
