Frankfort, Kentucky: Completely Charming

To begin, Frankfort is the CUTEST little city. It's the first time I've visited and it's become one of my favorite towns in the South. A little background info, Frankfort is an old city for American standards, it was founded in 1786 and was made capital upon Kentucky's statehood in 1792. It is still the capital of Kentucky and has a population of around 26,000.

The city is divided into 4 sections; Downtown, West, East, and South Frankfort. The newer sections are West and East Frankfort and the older sections are Downtown and South Frankfort. The Old State Capitol building is in Downtown and the current building as well as other government buildings and the governor's mansion is in South Frankfort.

Frankfort has a vibrant street life with many outdoor cafes and large sidewalks. It's the most pedestrian friendly city in Kentucky. I was in Frankfort for only about 2 hours so I only managed to get shots of a part of downtown and two shots of the government buildings area. We drove through the very pretty historic neighborhoods of South Frankfort but didn't manage to get any shots. It was a hot (86F/31C) and VERY humid Tuesday afternoon so not too many people out and about, but in nicer weather and on the weekends the streets come alive.

Hope you enjoy the photo tour

Here is Broadway, the entrance to Downtown. An active train track runs through the middle of downtown. Also, the old Capitol is located here.

Next we move to St Clair's Mall, a pedestrian oriented street lined with shops and outdoor cafes

Here's a terrible photo of the Kentucky State Capitol from the backseat of a moving vehicle. Unfortunately I couldn't capture the dome

So freight trains run through the main street like a streetcar? Don't think I've ever seen that before.

It's very common in Southern towns, many downtowns are bisected by train tracks.

Quite interesting indeed. Also, I noticed that some places in Frankfort look a lot like Victoria, BC (check my signature lol). Both are state/provincial capitals. The downtown area of Frankfort appears fairly well-preserved yet still thriving.

Interesting I do see similarities! But Victoria has a much prettier setting. (Though Frankfort sits at the bottom of a bluff in a river valley)

One of my favorite questions in Germany is, of which state Frankfort is the capital. But I have never seen any picture of this capital before. Thanks for showing.
