Postcards from Brussels

Hi, I'm new of the SCC forum. I go under the pseudonym of Auggie Wren (long story), I'm italian but based in Brussels. After having lurked big time scouting for interesting locations in Belgium, I'm here to share some of my photos taken in Brussels. I hope you will enjoy them. Opinion, critics and suggestions are all welcome, as they will help me in my "wannabe photographer" sickness.

Let's start with three photos: two have been already posted in another thread, and one is fresh.

1. Saint Luc Institute for Art&Architecture in the district of Saint Gilles
image hosted on flickr

This is an HDR of multiple exposures taken during the so called blue hour.

2. View from Place Poelaert -I-
image hosted on flickr

Another tribute to Brussels' blue hour (in HDR)

3. View from Place Poelaert -II-
image hosted on flickr

Another HDR, another photo to Brussels' skyline from the belvedere of Place Poelaert, this time in the glorious light of sunset. If only I could put a couple of dancers on that roof...

Parc du Cinquantenaire

A late evening shot of the Parc of Cinquantenaire from the roundabout of Montgomery. I placed myself over the exit of the tunnel Tervuren to try to have some light trails make the photo more interesting.
I also had to put a fight with the editing because that tunnel is a mess of blue and purple colors. Also this is a HDR.

Great shots! Very artistic. My kind of photography. I Will follow your work!

From a technical standpoint you have to be careful with HDR's not too introduce too much "local contrast" like on the bricks in the first shots. There is also a bit of haloing on the roof there. You also have to be careful with color shifts. For sure tone down the reds/yellows in the images a bit for a more natural look. There is also a bit of a blue cast on all the structures.

Thank you all for your comments. Ribarca, you are perfectly right I'm still trying to balance my HDRs. Sometime though, some "defects" are wanted, like the blue cast in the 1st and 2nd photos, as well as the gritty look of the 2nd photo.

Let's continue with "l'Hotel de Ville" of Saint Gilles district (back side)

It's quite an impressive building, one of my favourite town halls in Brussels. The first pic I like best.

Great additions. Awesome building. The tower is clearly one of the many la Giralda inspired ones.

I hope you continue this.

I agree. The HDR on the bricks is actually perfect.

Rue Coudenberg

Thanks again for your king comments. I don't have a huge stash of photos yet, but living here I should be able to produce a fairly regular stream of images.

To continue with night views in HDR, here Rue COudenberg from Mont des Arts.

P.S.
The wonderful orange car is mine...

Jardin du Mont des Arts

by Night. In the background, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart is visible near the tower symbol of the Grand Place.

Need help from the people of Brussels: Do you know where it would be possible to go to photograph the city from high above? I know it is possible to access the top roof of Parking 58 and I suppose the Atomium also will be a good location. I do see many towers/tall building that would offer majestic views on the city but I'm afraid are all privates. For instance, there is "The Hotel" in Place Louise... do you think there will be a way to access a last floor or the roof just to snap some photos without actually pay a night stay in a suite on the last floor?

Anyone having experiences or suggestions?

Cool shot!

I would just for companies and hotels if you can go up and offer them a few photos. The same with private owners who want to have their view photographed.

I would not go up buildings myself. They are very paranoid in Europe these days and don't want to get arrested.
