A few shots from the city of Lucca.
In my opinion it is one of the most impressive cities not only in Tuscany, but the whole of Italy. It is one of the very few places which have kept an almost intact renaissance-era defensive wall, so the old town has remained largely unchanged for the last few hundred years.

The layout of the city can be better illustrated by this photo from Luccalive.com (http://www.luccalive.com/2012/09/28/...eri-a-lucca-2/)

72. Flea market in Piazza di duomo.

73. San Michele in Foro basilica

74. The tower of San Ferdiano basilica

75. Some 20 km to the North - the impressive peaks of Alpi Apuani

76. A number of towers remain in the city, the most important of which is Torre Guinigi (44,25 m). It was built around year 1384 by the Guinigi family, which was ruling the city in those days. The interesting feature of the tower is the hanging garden at the top of it, containing several oak trees.

There is an observation deck at the top of the tower. The price is 4€ for the adults and 3€ for the students and it is well worth it!

77. The street seen in shot #76 from the top.

78. The view towards the West...

79. ...and the North. At the centre of the shot you can see Piazza anfiteatro. It was built on the site of a former Roman-era amphiteatre.

97. Lucca wall is lit very well at night.

98. The tower of the Duomo can also be seen from outside the old town.

99. To finish this set of photos, the distant view of Lucca from Monte Pisano. The city is set in a valley and is surrounded by hills and mountains in (pretty much) every direction.

A couple of months ago my parents were visiting me in Pisa and we decided to rent a car and drive South.

100. The first destination was Siena and its main sight - Piazza del Campo. Two times each summer a famous horse race Palio di Siena is held here. This is also the location of the city's main landmark - Torre de Mangia, an 88-metre tower built in 1338-1348. The tower's name translates to "Eater's tower" due to the famous appetite of Giovanni di Balduccio, the tower's guardian.

101.

102.

The stairs leading to the top of the tower are quite narrow, so the number of people allowed to the top is strictly controlled. People are admitted in small groups and are given around 15 minutes at the top. By the way, the bags (including small women's purses) have to be left in the lockers at the bottom of the tower (luckily, I was allowed to keep my camera and sneakily managed to stuff an extra lens in my pocket ). The ticket is 8€. In any case, the views are astounding and are totally worth the price and the hassle.

107. During our visit there was a parade with drums and large flags. I was not sure what it was about and whether it was a daily/weekly occurrence or some special occasion...

We did not stay in Siena very long and headed South. Southern Tuscany is famous for its wines (Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Montepulciano) and its landscapes. Val d'Orcia is listed in the UNESCO world heritage list and was very popular among renaissance-era painters as well as present-day photographers.

108.

109. On the left you can see the tower of Pienza. Like most other towns in the area, Pienza is built on top of a hill. In the 15th century Pienza was rebuilt as an "ideal town" by the order of pope Pius II.

110. A few shots from the town.

The last destination of the trip was San Gimignano, famous for its numerous towers. In the medieval times as many as 72 could be counted, out of which 14 remain.

130. A large part of the old defensive wall is remaining. The tower on the western edge of the wall provides an excellent view. I decided to stay in this spot and wait for the sunset, since the sky looked quite promising.
