It is considered a spire by the CTBUH. However, it seems like they shot themselves in the foot with such choice, since I personally believe that even under their own criteria it would be an antenna, and NOT a spire. Come on, it has no cladding to begin with! It is an antenna!

I think they ruined that building. Looks horrible like that to me.

The whole Freedom Tower building is a massive glass giant. Why add a stick on top of building like that? It doesn't even match the shape, looks really fake

I like Nordstorm spire better. It goes with the design

But the two aren't comparable at all. One it's a steel antenna on top of a skyscraper, the other it's a concrete communications and observation tower.

The fact that they heavy debated about it shows the bias and politics of the whole ordeal. If the Freedom Tower was in any other country no one would give a rat's ass about it and just call the stick an antenna. Also if the CTBUH ruled that the stick is an antenna and should not be counted, I could imagine the backlash it would get. So it called it a spire instead.

Exactly. It's a stick and there was lots of political will to call it a 1776ft building to match the US year of independence. That some people just accept things at face value always surprises me.

The double standard is that if the spire on 1 WTC doesn't count, then the CN Tower isn't 1815'!
Gimme a break. Are you honestly comparing things like the CN Tower or Oriental Pearl to a antennae stuck on the top of a skyscraper? These towers are concrete and steel with elevators going up them, have tens of thousands of usable square feet inside, and occupied. A metal beam is just a stick.

1 WTC is 1368ft not 1776ft, First Canadian Place is 998ft not 1165ft, and the CN Tower is 1815ft by everyone's definition. Calling 1 WTC 1776ft is a distortion and an illusion. I suppose I could glue a candelabra on my head then convince you I'm 7ft tall.

And btw, the CN Tower/432 Park post was about them both dwarfing their surroundings so you're taking things way out of context. Twisting people's words to suit one's own argument? Honestly, you're grasping at straws at this point.

I'm comparing the tops of each. Above the second observation deck, the CN Tower is also just a stick. A pretty thick stick, but still a stick. At the end of the day, both the CN and 1 WTC reach nearly the same amount into the sky. It's hard to say where to draw the line. I don't think either antenna or spires should count in official height. I just think if you are comparing across 2 types of structures (buildings vs freestanding tower) that you should use the same standard for each. Count them both to the tip 555.3m CN vs 546.2 antenna or 541.3 spire WTC, or count them both to the roof with 457.2 CN vs 417 WTC. Either of those is "fair" to me, but I would say 555.3 CN vs 417 WTC becomes that apples to oranges comparison.

However to be fair 1 WTC was planned to have a stick that reaches 1776 feet. One of the reasons CTBUH ruling for the antennas not counting is because no building ever plans to have a communication antenna on them but you always plan have a spire. The idea is that buildings can't get taller when they retrofit or extend a comm tower on top of it somewhere down the line. First Canadian Place and Sears Tower never planned to have a com tower at the top. Plus antennas get extended all the time, like the Sears tower's antennas. So you could imagine that if antennas are included it would be a giant dick extending contest.

NYC’s skyline will be radically different in 2018

There are of course many more projects currently under way, but you get the idea. Also some models aren't correct (like 1 Vanderbilt which is more elegant and 1,514ft).

Looking at height of new buildings in NYC, it will definitely have one of the tallest skylines, but their design looks pretty plain/ugly to me (especially the super skinny ones) . Apart from that, single towers sticking out here and there just don't look that good when looking at a whole - if there was one designated area for all those supertalls, it would look way better imo.

^ Tower Verre and 111 West 57th Street are one of the most beautiful supertalls here on this very forum. 432 PA is classy and Nordstrom futuristic. Far from ugly. Also sorry to disappoint, but New York builds its supertalls in the urban fabric. No "towers in the park" here. Even the WTC and especially the HY are very dense.
And don't read too much into those models. The renderings are far more beautiful. Check the corresponding threads.
