Toronto hasn't erected a show piece tower in about 30 years. A construction boom is great but one does expect it to produce at least 1-2 buildings that are truly a cut above. One Bloor is nice but falls short imo.

I'm curious what you think of 'The One' and 'Mirvish-Gehry' proposals. They promise to give Toronto the new iconic buildings we've been patiently waiting for since 2006 (when the current boom started). As beautiful as they look, they might not be tall enough (304m, 274m, 304m) to get noticed. I suspect it would take 400m at the minimum these days.

Really? They might not be as iconic as the CN Tower, but I absolutely love One Bloor, Aura, ICE and L Tower, for starters. 1 Yonge and The One will also be fantastic.

Public opinion here is split. The L Tower has a great silhouette but the quality of window on the north side was a big disappointment. If it gets a re-clad one day it can be rectified but in its current state it's just an average addition.

AURA's top third looks great, but the lower two-thirds isn't. Again, a better quality window wall would fix that. ICE I & II and One Bloor are wonderful and a step up from both L Tower and AURA but I'd stop short of calling them iconic. That word gets bandied about too much imo.

The One promises to be fantastic. 1 Yonge has the potential to be but isn't a high end building so it will likely fall a little short. Mirvish-Gehry might end up being a very famous iconic landmark so I have my fingers crossed for that one.

Shenzhen is a beast!

I still think NYC will be the world's most impressive skyline ~10 years from now though...

I'm not even going to attempt to say that it'll be amongst the best in the world, but for its size, Brisbane has to be going through one of the most impressive skyscraper booms globally and the quality of architecture is fantastic. It's already disproportionately large, but all of the following are either underway or proposed:

30 Albert Street and Brisbane Skytower (270m, proposed and U/C, left and right):

240 Margaret Street (269m, proposed, right):

171 Edward Street (265m, proposed):

300 George Street (262m, U/C):

1 William Street (260m, U/C):

545 Queen Street (250m, proposed):

195 Elizabeth Street (196m, proposed):

500 George Street (191m, proposed):

443 Queen Street (185m, proposed):

Abian Botanic Gardens (148m, U/C):

Spire (130m, U/C):

Shenzhen is a miracle of the last 4 decades. To think this city didn't even exist at all in 1980.

Anyway, I believe Shenzhen is not a competitor to NYC in skyline. Shenzhen has very different city planning and has no interest in single, dense CBD like New York (example, downtown and midtown Manhattan). Even the current main CBD in SZ has big park, shopping mall and convention centre in the middle

People should spend some time admiring the cityscape of Shenzhen, it's far more than just skyline and skyscraper. The Chinese government has put a lot of effort developing the city

I doubt it, shenzhen is already calming down, (like most Chinese cities), as they become more developed. Shenzhen is evolving into a more mature city, like shanghai has, and both will be like Hong Kong (development wise) before too long. Shanghai is further down this road and will be another Hong Kong very soon, it all ready nearly is

I view Brisbane as the Australian 'Vancouver' but it's smoking Vancouver in the skyline department. Brisbane is building taller and with much better designs.

One thing I really like about Australian skyscrapers is they truly have their own style. Melbourne/Brisbane's skyline won't look like any other once everything's complete.

Outside the inner city it's still quite sprawly though, has a bit of work to do in that regard

I don't think so, there are just too many projects in the pipeline: Qianhai CBD, the remaining Houhai plots, Shenwan Station towers, the Kingkey project in Louhu, the projects between East Pacific Center and Riverfront Times Square, all the village redevelopments (for example: Baishizhou redevelopment but many more) and Sungang, which they also plan to redevelop.

The strong influence of NIMBY in Vancouver with their precious protected view corridors of the snow-peak mountains and maximum height limit of 200 m is maddening!

IMHO, Brisbane, with its current building proposals, is going to beat Sydney as the second best skyline in OZ. It's more like Calgary than Vancouver in that regard.

Skyscrapers over 170 m/557 ft

Brisbane
Population: 2,308,700 (2015)

Calgary
Population: 1,439,756 (2015)

Source: SkyscraperPage

I noticed that most of Brisbane's tallest skyscrapers are residential towers, OTOH, most of Calgary's tallest skyscrapers are office towers.
