Proposed Shenzhen Qianhai project (shared by Barbaricmanchurian). I doubt if this project will become a reality given the height restriction in that area.

Which cities besides the obvious top 5 and adding maybe Guangzhou and Shenzhen compare to Chicago.

The Spire isn't the only supertall planned either.

I'll re-post my 2025 top 5 from post #1330:

Top 5 in 2025
1. Shenzhen
2. New York
3. Shanghai
4. Hong Kong
5. Mumbai

The next 5 spots will be a dogfight between about 10-12 cities: Guangzhou, Chongqing, Tianjin, Dalian, Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Dubai, Toronto, and Chicago.

I've looked at what's built, under construction, approved, but also the inventory of proposals in the pipeline in all the cities I've listed above. Even if Chicago builds everything that's at the proposal stage + a few more, Chicago might find itself outside of most people's top 10 in 2025. 8-10 super talls might not be enough to keep Chicago there. Besides, a skyline isn't just about super talls. 100m+, 200m+, 300m+, 400m+ all play a part as do many other factors.

It would have been laughable just 10 years ago to suggest that Chicago might drop out of a top 10, but that's a distinct possibility considering what's set to unfold in Asia over the next 11 years.

As an Indian, i don't think Mumbai will be in the top 5. May be in the top 10... By 2025, Mumbai will definitely have 1000+ highrises (100m+ buildings) and minimum 70-80 skyscrapers (200m+) but, majority of those will be residential. Mumbai desperately needs taller office/commercial towers...

I will rather put Dubai or Tianjin in the no.5 slot.

I wondered about that myself. Unfortunately, I see Chicago falling out of the top 10.

There seems to be a ton of super talls planned for Mumbai. It's growing so quickly it's hard to predict, but I wouldn't be surprised if they zoom all the way to #5 by 2025. This is India's NY/Shanghai; Mumbai's skyline is going to be HUGE!

Agree that Mumbai is nowhere near a top 20 today, but if the quality of their new towers is up to scruff they definitely have a legitimate shot.

Lol Mumbai's population is expected to be around 25 million by 2025. So yeah, the demand for more highrises/skyscrapers will always be there.

Quote:
The projections made in the UN's recent publication, State of The World's Cities 2012-13, suggests that the Delhi urban agglomeration will have a population of 28.6 million by 2025, still well behind Tokyo's 37.1 million. Mumbai will, in the meantime, have reached a population of 25.8 million. article link

Possibly, but they're going to need a heap of buildings in the 100-300m category to balance out their super talls. The truly great skylines have a good layering of buildings of various architectures, height, etc.

How about Seoul? They are the world largest/ 2nd largest population for metropolitan

and now they have Lotte World with 555M ongoing, Samsung Parc 338m and many more. Possible addition Seoul IBD

and one more city in the list will be Busan as currently Lotte also building 500m+ supertall there as well.

I agree.. I think these 2 cities has almost reached it's peak or potential.
Bangkok is aggressive in decentralization... and focusing more on rural cities..
And Singapore.. It's already super developed.. I don't know how much more growth it can gain.

I don't think Seoul would be in the top 10. Not many projects are u/c and even the u/c supertalls are far away from each other. Yes Lotte tower is a good one but i'm afraid it might end up like Taipei 101. If they can somehow manage to restart the IBD project... they might have a chance.

In picture : Seoul skyline and Lotte tower, 555m in the middle
