~1600m i would say. i don't think a 2000m project will start until 2020 or so. not to forget such a tower would at least take 10 years to complete.

Who knows, maybe there will be a construction technology breakthrough that'll help save time and cost. Something like what Changsha Sky City is claiming, although I don't believe Sky City will actually make it

A 2km tall tower in a developing country, likely in the Indonesian jungle.

Well, middle east will be in an economical crysis and far east countries will be trying to develop "livable" cities for once, so I guess it will be around 1500 meters. I guess it will be a kind of "swan song" for the oil-driven countries. I don't think any city like New York, London or Paris will even attempt a 1000 meter structure, as it probably will be not worth the price.

Cities like NY or Paris won't build such a structure because it will be an eyesore.

Saudi prince eyes world's big cities for mile-high tower

By Mirna Sleiman

DUBAI | Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:31pm IST

(Reuters) - Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal says he is looking at the world's largest cities, including Shanghai, Moscow, London and New York, as possible locations to build a mile-high skyscraper that would be the world's tallest building by far.

The prince is inviting Dubai's biggest real estate developer Emaar Properties, chaired by Mohammed Alabbar, to team up with his investment firm Kingdom Holding on the project.

"Right now we are discussing and evaluating the possibility of building a one-mile (1.6-kilometer) tower," Alwaleed told Reuters by telephone late on Monday.

"We also need good partners. I invite Emaar and Mr. Alabbar to join forces with us and see how we can build the ultimate one-mile tower somewhere in the world."

Alwaleed did not say how the project would be financed if it went ahead, or when it might be completed. He said the cost had yet to be decided.

i am still doubtful about Azerbaijan Tower and Sky City. So i think we will get Kingdom Tower with ~1050m in 2018/2019.

Whether the next one after that is the new unnamed tower or the one in dubai i don't know, but i think it will not be a mile-high. i believe it will end up being 1150m-1250m tall and finish in 2023-2025.

I believe there is a good chance of the chinese start planning a new tallest building in one of their booming cities in the next coming years as well and it may start rising before the other one is finished. SO maybe 1200m-1400m in 2028-2030

I believe we will see rather close World records, only topping the previous one by 100m or similar for the next few after Kingdom Tower, but then after that i could imagine a real mile height building that tops the previous record by another few hundret meters again, but for the next 15 years i think we will have a few racing going on that make close records on their previous title holders.

first the world needs some 1000m+ towers before we can wait for a 2000m+ building.

I agree. This is something for rich dictators who want a landmark for themselves.

i am still waiting for buildings that are a mixture between observation towers and skyscrapers. maybe an office building until 700m and then a spire on top that people can go up with an elevator with a restaurant and observation platform at 1000m and the end of the spire at 1200m
