SALAMANCA, Castile y León

A new page can only mean one thing - a new city. Actually, this is the most recent visit to a Spanish city - 1st June 2013. We shall return to Madrid in the future.

Salamanca, situated in the northwest of the country, is large enough (180.000 inhabitants) to be able to offer the advantages of a real city, but at the same time it keeps the intimacy of a village. In Salamanca, the inhabitants supposedly speak the "purest" Spanish in Spain - Castellano. For this reason Salamanca is enormously popular with people all over the world who want to learn Spanish. Contacts are made easily. You don't have to make rendezvous as you are bound to see everyone in the Plaza Mayor, one of the finest squares in Spain and known as the living room of the Salamantinos. As there is such a varied range of nationalities, it is tempting to keep to fellow Don Quixote students. Salamanca is however, a real university city, Spanish students are everywhere and you can go practically everywhere on foot.

The city of Salamanca, or “Helmantika”, was founded in the 4th century BC by the Celts and Romanized short after. It constituted an important link of communications of the Ruta de la Plata, the Roman “Road of the Silver” which crossed the Peninsula from North to South. Helmantika was later called Salmantica and finally, since the 13th century, the city got its present name, Salamanca. In the 8th century, during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, the city was conquered by Musa Ibh Nusair, and Muslim culture took over Christianity.

After the Christian Reconquest, in the 13th century, the king Alfonso IX boosted the development of the city and founded the University of Salamanca, which was ratified by the Pope Alexander in 1255. The city and its university reached great prestige at the time and afterwards, with outstanding figures such as the famous writer Miguel de Unamuno, who was vice-Chancellor at the University of Salamanca.

Another outstanding episode of the Spanish history takes place in Salamanca, when during the Spanish war of Independence, the French army was defeated in the Battle of Arapiles, in 1812. Salamanca was also a key city during the Spanish Civil War. All the documents obtained by the national troops during the occupation of the country where concentrated in Salamanca, creating a famous archive of documents of the Spanish war.

With the establishment of democracy and the arrival of monarchy in Spain, the prestige of the city and its University flourished again. Salamanca has become a cosmopolitan city and is continuously growing in culture and heritage, as shows its recognition by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, and its recent designation as European Capital of Culture, in the year 2002.

So, see what you make of it:

We start by arriving at Salamanca La Armedilla train station, having taken the AVE from Madrid. One quickly finds Gran Via, off which a collection of narrow streets take you by Salamanca's main market towards the Plaza Mayor.

Hehe Miguel, you have a problem with Spanish city shields, the one of Salamanca has the Roman bridge and a bull on it

Nice pics of a wonderful city, I had the fortune to be a student there and it was a wonderful experience, it is such a great place... I hope you stayed long enough to show us many more pics of the uncountable amount of monuments Salamanca has. From your photos I can guess the route you followed and even though you went down Gran Vía I don´t see any pic of San Esteban or Convento de las Dueñas, Did you manage? and if the case How you found the very famous Salamanca night life???

Thanks for sharing! Hope for many more pics

Oh dear haha, I think I've grown to the ones with the city's name included in them. Do they actually mean anything?

I certainly have plenty more photos though unfortunately it was only a day trip so I did not experience the nightlife. I can imagine it is a fantastic place to go out and have fun as a student though. Unless the mentioned buildings appear in the following pictures, I guess I did not see them. I was walking with a flatmate and did not have a map.

SALAMANCA, Castile y León

So, having crossed Plaza del Mercado (Market Square), a small passageway leads into the famous Plaza Mayor. This Baroque masterpiece is the main meeting place in the city and certainly does not disappoint. We continued up Calle Zamora towards Plaza de los Bandos, resided by a number of notable and attractive buildings.

Continuing around Calle Zamora, two squares - Plaza de los Bandos and Plaza de la Libertad provide a little spot of greenery amongst the historical buildings. Calle Concejo is a sidestreet off Calle Zamora, running parallel and joins Plaza Mayor at one of the corners. Emerging into Plaza Mayor, we cross to the other side and emerge into Plaza del Corillo. From here, one can get a view towards the Cathedral.

Great shots. Salamanca just looks amazing. Love the architecture and the unique sand colors.

Did you photograph the university as well?
