This is disgusting, grotesque, barbaric, short-sighted. I can't describe how angry I am about this. This is an absolute gem. This part of New York is one of the few where I can look all around me and feel as if I've stepped back in time 100 years. Now we have the slow seeping-in of these new condos, uppending the traditional feel and look of this immediate area. And why did this happen?

It was a failure of the Landmark Preservation Commission.

It was a failure of the New York NIMBYs, who have absolutely ridiculous priorities and will protest to protect 2 less inches of shadow in Central Park while allowing real architectural treasures to go under without a peep.

This is a failure of Trinity Church, a Christian church-turned-real estate corporation whose staff spends more time buying and selling property than actually doing what their tax-exempt status says they should be doing: religious work. Just look at the priorities of this "church": http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/25/ny...alth.html?_r=0

Rev. James Cooper, truly a despicable man who allowed Trinity Church to descend into chaos: http://nypost.com/2012/03/18/trinity...ravagant-ways/ (I strongly recommend everyone read that article)

This is terrible for New York. And I cant believe nobody really cares

Trinity quietly scraps plans for FiDi condo development
Church will instead build 145K mixed-use building at 74 Trinity Pl.
The Real Deal: http://therealdeal.com/2016/02/24/tr...o-development/

Quote:
From the outset, Trinity Church’s decision to develop a luxury condominium in Lower Manhattan seemed at odds with its commitment to community service and low-income housing. Now, the Episcopal church has quietly scrapped plans for a residential tower at the site of its 90-year-old parish building, where it will instead build a community center and offices.
Gone are the condos. New plans call for a 145,000-square-foot mixed-use building at 74 Trinity Place, church officials and architects disclosed during a community meeting held on Feb. 21. The building will house more than 98,000 square feet of community space, including classrooms, gym facilities, a café and a formal meeting room with floor-to-ceiling windows that face the historic Trinity Church directly across the street at 75 Broadway.

this has been a complete failure. An architectural travesty. YIMBY reports that a 25 story building will replace the lost 25-story prewar building. They're not even going taller. Pelli better come up with a masterpiece here.

Agreed! I still pour one out for the Cook+Fox proposal that lost out to Pelli (side note: Pelli also beat out one of my all time favorite proposals, the SOM design for SF's Transbay Tower and Terminal, in a similar competition)...

But this is actually a very attractive building in its own right. The worst things you can say about it are that it's still a shame the old building had to get razed, and this design feels maybe more suited to Midtown. But that's obviously a vast improvement over "outright travesty."

I do like the base of the new design, I'll give it that.

Trinity Church’s Lower Manhattan tower is back on, without condos
The centuries-old parish will instead develop a 25-story mixed-use building
