Awesome, the spot where the machines are should be the main tower's area. It's "just" soil testing though.

Those things don't penetrate to the depth they're collecting samples from. They don't scrap the surface, they go from 20 -30 to more than 100 meters deep.

Not really. Soil testing is a design oriented tool just like the wind tunnel, not a construction one.

Isn't soil testing also to find out how deep the piles have to be?

Soil testing is soil testing, but yes, the results will determine how many piles they need, what diameter they should have and what their spacing should be. All of these factors depend on the soil conditions, depth of bedrock, etc. Ironically, the foundations are always the first part of a structure to be build, but the last to be designed. Excluding interiors.

Sigh, the site looks like the Burj Al Alam site from back in the day-early 2009, maybe?
Hopefully it won't suffer the same fate.

It's actually very logical. They first need to know the scale of the footprint and then the weight of the building. You can only calculate these data when you know how the tower is going to look like.

1. It was their intention to build a tower, that is the tallest commercial tower in the world in roof height without cheating with a crown or spire.
2. How the hell can you add a crown to the current design? It would look totally displaced.
