Preliminary Design of Burj 2020 Revealed at Cityscape Global in Dubai

Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) unveiled on September 8 a preliminary design for Burj 2020, a skyscraper that could potentially reach up to 700 meters in height with the top two floors operating as an observation deck. Official height statistics have not been released, and prior building announcements have placed the height at 550 meters.

“The demand that will be registering will dictate the exact height of the tower but at the highest it might go 700 [meters] plus. We are looking at a supertall tower and we are looking at having one of the world’s highest viewing decks which will offer 360 degree experience,” said Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC, after launching the Burj 2020 District at Cityscape Global.

The master-planned district will comprise seven towers and over one million square meters of built-up area, which is approximately equivalent to one-third the size of the existing Jumeirah Lakes Towers (housing 66 towers) and nearly twice the size of New York’s Rockefeller Center. In addition, there will be retail offerings totaling over 100,000 square meters.

The district has been master planned by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG). “Inspired by faceted gemstones, the Burj 2020’s design is rooted in the principles of perpetual value, enduring strength, and everlasting beauty. Symbolizing the next stage of growth for the city, the design of the tower is also inspired by the facets of a diamond – elegant, bold, and timeless,” said Smith.

Haha I was so excited about the design, that I forgot about that
But really, this is a new level of architecture and I can't believe, that they really have chosen the best architecture ever: The crystal design! You can already guess which development U/C is one of my favorite:

The design of a tower in the movie "Star Trek - Into Darkness" looks quite similar

Star Trek: Beyond will be filming next month in the same district area, doubling for an alien planet. A friend got casted as extra and said the costume he'll be wearing was very cool.

you can't call a tower with such a design boring whatever the color of the cladding turned out to be ... but I agree a darker color will be more interesting.

I don't like dark colour, especially black, tall towers. Especially in this part of the world with abundance sunshine, just like black/dark colour cars, it would look horrible.

it won't really feel so dark, if the cladding is really reflective though.

Yes I hope it will be a darker gray-blue cladding.

That black design would go really well in Chicago. Strong, bold, dark, ominous with some present day elements in it.

You're totally right! Smith+Gill should design something like this for the Chicago Spire site, it would be a perfect fit.
