From Bloomberg:

Dubai Sees Need for Tallest Office Tower Amid 45% Vacancy

In Dubai, where almost half of the offices sit empty, the head of a state-owned business zone says there’s room to build the world’s tallest office tower.
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, said the Persian Gulf business hub can still attract tenants and investors with such a project because many of its buildings are unsuitable for large businesses. Bin Sulayem helped lead the development of the DMCC’s 68-story Almas Tower, Dubai’s tallest building when it was completed in 2007. The tower’s full and has a waiting list for tenants, he said.

well that's quite a statement building a megatall by 2020 means preparations need to start next year or it gets pretty close

I have a feeling this will be the third tallest building in the world from start to finish unless Dubai has a few more tricks up it's sleeve.

I also have the feeling that this name change (with Expo 2020 as reference) means we will have something amazing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakheel_Tower#Name

Wikipedia says Burj 2020 is the new name of Nakheel Tower, without any source of course, so it's likely bull. Just thought I'd bring it up anyway.

something like Nakheel Tower could never be built as something other than mixed used though. and this will be a pure office tower.

Yeah, but on the odd chance that the Wikipedia article is right this could be a shorter tower built on Nakheel Tower's former site.

Yeah if something is written on Wikipedia and there is no source, 99% of the time it's bull.

Take it easy and relax, the world and financial rules have changed, you wont see again dozens of new supertalls under construction at the same time, at least not in Dubai . . and may not even in Shanghai.

" The good old times " are gone forever.

German Wiki is pretty good. They have strict rules and less trolls. I myself am an editor and always provide sources. See my sig.

Not in Shenzhen and other major Chinese cities. Shanghai is far behind in the supertall race anyway.

Burj 2020 will be completed on time: Ahmed bin Sulayem

DMCC to work in tandem with authorities for timely completion of what will be the world's tallest commercial tower

Quote:
Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) will engage service and utility providers in the emirate by early next year to ensure timely and successful completion of Burj 2020, the world’s tallest commercial tower.

“We will be engaging with service providers such as the Dubai Municipality, the Roads and Transport Authority and the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority in early 2014 to ensure a successful and timely delivery of the Burj 2020 and the One JLT projects,” Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman, DMCC, told Emirates 24|7.

“We are building the tower from the inside out. Efficiency is the key… it will be the most efficient high rise in the world," he asserted.

Though the intention is to deliver a highly efficient, purpose-built commercial office space for multinationals, DMCC, on the business front, is aiming to have 10,000 members by 2015. It, currently, has over 7,800 member companies.

Nearly 80,000 people work and live Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), with bin Sulayem putting the occupancy rates in the residential towers at over 90 per cent.
JLT is a waterfront community, comprising 87 residential, office and mixed-use towers.

DMCC chief also spoke on issues such as gains from Expo 2020, opening of the first park in JLT and their CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities.

Work on Dubai's Burj 2020 to start in 2015
Construction of the world’s tallest commercial tower, Burj 2020, will begin in Dubai in 2015, the executive chairman of Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority revealed.

Ahmed Sultan Bin Sulayem said that the project had been put out to tender, with the architect to be announced this year.

“Construction will start in 2015,” said Bin Sulayem, who was speaking at the Destination Dubai 2020 conference held at JW Marriott Marquis Dubai today.

He said that the building —which was first announced in July 2013 and named Burj 2020 after Dubai’s successful Expo 2020 bid was announced on 27 November — would be the world’s tallest single-use tower.
He added, however, that it would include “some nice entertainment features”, including a viewing deck.

Bin Sulayem said that when it came to financing the project, “DMCC was in a better position than it ever was in before”.

He suggested that DMCC would look for financing “so that the whole of Dubai benefits” and to create more jobs.

Burj 2020 will be part of DMCC’s Free Zone Business Park expansion plans (107,000m²), catering to the increased global demand from multi-nationals and regional corporates for large-scale commercial space in Dubai.
