I'm actually surprised Houston hasn't boomed more. That city is an energy giant (which is basically the biggest industry in the world anyway), and they have a lot of other sectors in technology and such as well. It's a decently diversified economy in a business friendly state.

What's crazy about Houston is if you put every 20+ story building in the city near the CBD, it would look ridiculous....

Louisiana Elevated: A Peek at the See-Through Skybridge of Chevron’s New 50-Story Skyscraper

Quote:
A reader sends this rendering of the skybridge that would hook up the existing Chevron buildings Downtown with the new 50-story big blue tower planned to rise at 1600 Louisiana and Pease, on the site of Kenneth Franzheim’s torn-down Downtown Y. The reader says that the new HOK-designed tower could rise as high as 830 ft., “making it the third tallest building downtown.” (Which, this rendering suggests, would invite backpack-wearing tourists to gawk and take photos.)

A few other details: “The 4th floor will have an outdoor cafeteria and event space while the recently purchased parking garage will have two new floors added to house a new fitness center.”

I hope the design will be a bit more inspiring than just a glass box

It will have the same rounded sides as the two existing towers in the [Enron] cluster. Nothing new, but at least not a box.

Chatter about a possible 10 floor increase. This one could brush close to 1,000 ft....

If the new 10 floors are the same height as the previously proposed 50, this should come out to around 305 meters. Perhaps this should be moved to the proposed supertall section.

The top two floors will be penthouse floors (conference rooms with higher ceilings), which further pushes up the chance of it being a super-tall.

Why is Houston booming far more than Dallas?

Dallas is booming but everything there happens in the northern suburbs. There are 3 potential supertalls in the works, the most likely of which will be Perot Tower.

Very true. Dallas was always the banking center of Texas while Houston thrives from the energy business. When the big Dallas banks collapsed and got merged in the 1980s and 90s, the city lost a key driver for new tower development. Only now is Dallas seeing new tall towers being built downtown. Houston's fortunes have risen with the price of oil and massive new shale finds. So the city is literally exploding.

Some more info on Chevron from HAIF: http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/h...18#entry443267

tangledwoods, on 18 Dec 2013 - 09:11 AM, said:

A few notes:

•Chevron has delayed the start of this project for multiple reasons, one of them being to allow more time for the design.

•The tower will get built, there have been 0 discussions regarding cancellation. [there had been rumors about a move to The Woodlands]

•The height of the tower was increased shortly after the project was awarded to the GC. (they added two floors)

•With the additional time for design there are discussions regarding the desired height for the tower, nothing is currently set in stone and anyone who throws out a height figure right now needs to understand that the height of the tower is FLEXIBLE with the start of construction pushed out.

The tower's design is changing (likely to accommodate new floors) so the start date has been pushed out. If, as rumored, it will be a 64 story tower, the height will easily exceed 950 feet and possibly 1,000 feet. We're waiting on a spy to deliver the goods...

As if things weren't weird enough, Chevron has decided to put off construction of the tower for at least a year: http://blog.chron.com/primeproperty/...old/?cmpid=bna

Quote:
Less than six months after announcing plans to build a 50-story office tower downtown and creating what it called an “urban campus” for its growing Houston workforce, Chevron Corp. said those plans are now on hold as the company focuses its resources elsewhere.

“Chevron continues to maintain a strong balance sheet and operating cash flow, but the company is in a unique, capitally-intensive period that will drive peer-leading production and value growth,” spokesman Justin Higgs said Thursday.

Higgs said Chevron is still committed to building the tower, as well as a few other real estate projects it had planned around the country that are also being suspended. A large office building project in Midland is moving forward.

The company does not expect to make a decision on when the project could resume until after 2014, Higgs said. Delaying the building, he added, will not affect previously announced employee relocations into Houston.

“We expect our employee presence to continue to grow,” Higgs said.
This comes after Mexico decided to open its oil fields to foreign companies after 80 years of state control. Chevron may be redeploying funds quickly to take advantage of the opportunity...
