Telus announces plans for 58-storey tower in downtown Calgary (with video)

CALGARY — Telus is planning to build a $400-million, 58-storey, 750,000 square-foot tower at the site of the current Art Central building, it was announced Thursday.

Art Central, located at 100 7th Ave. S.W., will be demolished to make room for Telus Sky, which the company says will transform Calgary’s skyline with “an architectural marvel, creating a dynamic community of blended urban living and working.” Telus says it will transform the entire 7th Avenue block into “one of the most technologically innovative and environmentally-friendly sites” in North America.

It will include the first 26 floors of office space and 32 upper floors, comprising 341 residential units.

9/10... really ambitious and different, thankfully NOT boxy or boring at all. Just wish it was a couple hundred feet taller, at least. It shouldn't be shorter than the Bow Tower, being so dazzling and dynamic. Otherwise a gorgeous gem for the Calgary skyline, definitely an iconic tower in the making.

It looks great as is, but some more height would make it look even better in relation to it's neighbors. Slip in a few more office floors at the bottom, and a few more residential on top.

CALGARY | Telus Sky | 221 M / 725 FT | 58 FL | Prep

Press release:

TELUS building reaches for the Sky

Quote:
TELUS is reaching for the sky with a new architectural landmark in Calgary’s downtown core, transforming the entire 7th Avenue block into one of the most technologically innovative and environmentally-friendly sites in North America.

TELUS Sky will be a LEED Platinum signature development for TELUS created by world-renowned architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Dialog, along with partners: developer Westbank and real estate investment trust Allied Properties. The 750,000 square foot vibrant mixed-use tower will incorporate office, retail and residential space. There will be 430,000 square feet of office space, of which 155,000 square feet will be for TELUS. The development, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2017, will provide approximately 250 jobs for Calgarians, and engage local trades and companies to complete our vision.
