Colmar - a medieval pearl in the Alsace

I don't know, if one can die by an overdose of beauty. As a precaution we start this new thread very slowly.

Colmar is a city in the east of France in the famous region of Alsace. What one can see in the historic city center is timber frame houses at each corner and behind every archway.

In Colmar one can find water not only in fountains, but also in a little river called Lauch.

There we meet the first highlight of this lovely city called Little Venice.

Before we enter Little Venice we have another look in a comparatively ugly corner of Colmar.

Before watching my second post, please check your pulse. I can't take any responsibility on your health.

First thing in Little Venice one can find is a bicycle.

But now it gets bombastic.

Also a look into the river doesn't show anything else.

No, it's not Eurodisney.

It's just the reality.

On the other side of the river there is a beautiful market hall.

For the moment a last look at Little Venice or Petite Venise how it's called in french. Next time I will take some more pictures in the morning sun.

Now I want to show pictures of the city center. Guess what one can see there: timber frame houses.

Beautiful images from Colmar - a town I have visited and very much liked. Indeed, there are is a whole string of such beautiful towns in the Alsace region, as you must know. Lovely!

Too much beauty to take in. Exquisite and heartbreaking.

The doors to the river show that the farmers originally transported their goods with barges to the market hall.

Unfortunately there was no water in the channel in this street behind the cathedral. This would have been another pittoresk picture. It's on the to-do-list of my next visit.

The Corps de Garde was home of the city guard and the court house.

It was a lie to say that behind each archway one can find timber frame houses in Colmar. Behind this archway there is a charming little art nouveau café.

One can see that Colmar didn't loose the influence of french architecture, while the Alsace was part of the German empire between 1871 and 1918. German Jugendstil ist not so playful than its french counterpart Art Nouveau.
