The consortium that proposed the above design lost the bid.

From the seoul digital media city main website (06/12):

Quote:
A 640m-tall building, the Landmark Building, is going to be built within Digital Media City(DMC) in Sangamdong, Seoul. once the project is completed, the new structure is going to be the tallest building in Korea.

Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday that the Capital Defense Command(CDC) has recently approved of the city government's plan to construct a 100m-tall spire on the top of the building(540m).

In fact, the Landmark Building to be built in Sangamdong is 20m taller than the one expected to be erected in Yongsan International Business District. The spire will pick up broadcast signals to air TV and radio programs.
After thorough consideration, the CDC has concluded that the spire wouldn't cause problems for it to use air routes and radar.

SMG selects priority bidders in the middle of this month. The project on the site of 30,443㎡ is scheduled to break ground in 2009 and be completed in 2013.

I am a new rookie on this forum and I am looking forward to sharing thoughts with you.

Any towers with the "land mark" status should not only inspire visual awesomeless but also reflect the culture in which it is being built. The rendering has enough visual intrigue but fails to harmonize itself with its culture or the surroundings. This design seems to have come from nowhere.

I have been informed that the city of Seoul is on a big plan to attract more foreign tourists. My question to the desginer is, what does this rendering says about Korea and Seoul? I do not see any at all.

this is only the beginning...

actually this is not the big plan to attract more foreign tourists. This project has been around for a while and thank God it is finally in the stage of starting!!

Anways, the Han River Renaissance project is the real big project that Seoul is undergoing which will change Han River's riverfront into a multi-purpose area with residences, landscaped parks, opera houses, river taxis, landmarks, etc. I think Seoul already has a lot of foreign tourists coming in and out, it's just that it hasn't gotten much attention yet in the "western" world (thanks to American TV like CNN ALWAYS talking about nuclear boms in North Korea around the clock -_-). It's so irritating for me to go into a bookstore (Barnes and Nobles, Borders) in the US and I find like only 3-4 books on South Korea and like 20+books on Japan and Tokyo...sometimes the USA needs to understand that there is much more to Asia than China and Japan and that Mexico and Europe is not the only place to go on a vacation in today's world. To sum it up, Korea is a pretty popular destination for people in China, Taiwan, Japan, and other southeast countries for the Korean Wave, Food, Shopping, Sightseeing, and the general atmosphere.
