Banjarmasin(and it's neighbours) in Pictures

Banjarmasin(and it's neighbours) in Pictures

This thread will contain photos taken by me around Banjarmasin.

Some info about the city:

- Population in 2010: 625,395

-Name meaning: Derived from the old-era spelling of the current name ,,Bandarmasih'' which means ,,Salty City''

-Geography: situated in/at the banks of the Barito and Martapura rivers

-Climate: Under the Kφppen climate classification, Banjarmasin features a tropical rainforest climate.[citation needed] Temperatures are relatively constant throughout the year, averaging about 27 degrees Celsius, and the city has no real dry season. However Banjarmasin has noticeably wetter and drier times of the year.[citation needed] November through May forms the wettest part of the year while the remainder of the year is the drier part of the year. Banjarmasin on average sees just under 2600 mm of rain per year.

-History: Nan Serunai was an ancient kingdom in South Kalimantan, but soon it was replaced by Buddhist kingdom of Tanjungpuri. In the fourteenth century, Banjarmasin was part of the Hindu kingdoms of Negara Dipa and Negara Daha, a vassal of Majapahit. But Pangeran Samudera converted to become a Muslim in the fifteenth century. Following this Banjarmasin was founded at the junction of the Barito and Martapura Rivers on 24 September 1526. The Dutch opened trade there in 1606. The British controlled the city for several brief periods. The British East India Company (EIC) started trading with the city, which they called Tamborneo or Tomborneo, in 1614. In 1703 the EIC established a factory there, which the inhabitants destroyed four years later. The EIC attempted, highly unsuccessfully, to trade with the city between 1736 and 1746, and then in 1747 the Sultan signed a treaty with the Dutch giving them a trade monopoly.

-Demographics: 96% of the population is Muslim. Other religions include Protestants, Catholics, Hindus and Buddhists.[1] The city is the home of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Banjarmasin

Pictures coming once my (premiere) photos are uploaded.

I am delighted and excited to see your take of Banjarmasin... and I am excited to have a unique city that you'll show us here over time. I mean, not a lot of people know about the city located on the southeastern corner of Borneo, in which it faces Java Sea to the south and vast tracts of forests can be found north of the city... Looking forward to your showcase! Take your time, and just do your best.

Take your time... For Flickr, uploads are done by batches of 200 images. And for faster uploads, you might want to go to an Internet cafe so that you can upload multiple images at once. I upload my stuff at university: for a set of around 500 new images, I could upload and edit them in around 10 minutes total.

2013 (1434 Hijrah) Ramadhan Cake Market // Pasar Wadai

Part 1

It is named like that because this event occurs only during the month of Ramadhan, and has been around since atleast 1985. Withe some exceptions, the cake market has always been held at the northernmost part of Jalan Lambung Mangkurat and as a result that well-trafficked avenue is closed during the Ramadhan.

1. Once i left Meratus Street i take this photo of the easternmost parts of Jalan Mayjend Sutoyo S.,

2. As you can see on the first picture there is a 6 story high T/O building, well here's a closer look at it :

4. Sabilal Muhtadin Grand Mosque as seen from the main entrance gate to that mosque.
