The top could really be the penthouse owned by an excentric billionaire. It looks like ones of those penthouses in movies where the rich evil guy would live. Or somebody like "Tony Stark". It seems to say "F**k you! I am the boss!". It clearly separates the owner from the "poor" people living below him. I like this concept very much.

i think its awesome. people who are afraid of the top, you really think one single building is gonna ruin a skyline of 100s of towers? no it just adds some flaviour and detail to it. id rather have 10 of this than 1 of that out of proportion bland 400m boxes at central park which will have a huge impact on the skyline. but no one complains about 426 street because its "omg lulz so yolo high".

I'm with those who like the top. What an unusual design! If they carried it down a few more stories, the building would look like a giant corkscrew. Coop Himmelb(l)au are one of the most innovative firms around, no one should have expected them to design a boring box.

What the F....!!!!

When I saw that, this is the first image that came to my mind, apparently, the architect was inspired by this...
He saw that and thought: so cool, let's make that but atop a 60-story skyscraper in NYC!!!

Only the cladding is good, the design isn't.

Actually I prefer Seoul version. Looks more industrial. But don't get me wrong, It's still awful.

Is this thing real? Please tell me it's not real. Did the art students vote in favor of the cantilever on top?

That would be good news. I hope so. I really like the height. However ultimately whoever designs this needs to make sure it will be complimentary with the WTC complex. If the same Architect just get rid of the top and all will be good.

The architects belong in Sochi or better yet, Astana. NYC is just wrong for this kind of grueling schlep.

What buildings does Sochi have? Looks more like something they would build in Doha.
