Klang eyeing city status
Friday January 11, 2008 By EDWARD RAJENDRA TheStar THE Klang Municipal Council (MPK) hopes that Klang will achieve royal city status on August 8 this year, but first it has to meet many requirements, among them, the need for a university. MPK president Mislan Tugiu said the council was working hard to achieve city status and that working papers were being prepared. “We do not have a university which is part of the criteria to move from a municipality to a city,” he said. However, the council had tossed around the idea of approving a public university within its jurisdiction. “Such an avenue would enhance the learning, teaching and working environment of Klang,” Mislan said. “We must understand that it is important to have a university as it is an investment in the intellectual future of generations to come,” he said after attending the MPK Industrial Friendly dinner attended by 70 companies from the district. “We are proposing approving a university and it this is supported by the State and Federal government, it would ensure that the building blocks of knowledge and success will also support this large community,” he added. Mislan said the municipality covered an area of about 573.8 square kilometres and had a population close to 900,000. He added that the municipality also served as a gateway to the country with well-planned ports and good infrastructure. According to him, Klang had a floating population of about 2mil working at the ports and surrounding areas. Apart from being the royal town, Mislan said Klang had always been a special place that had served as the state capital from 1880 to 1977. Selangor currently has two cities – Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya. |

Kota Bridge declared structurally deficient
Wednesday January 23, 2008 Story and photos by EDWARD RAJENDRA TheStar The famous Kota Bridge in the royal town of Klang, the first and only double-decked bridge in the country, has been declared structurally deficient. According to Klang Municipal Council (MPK) Engineering Department director Mohamad Noor Mahmud, the 500m bridge fell into disrepair about 15 years ago after the Public Works Department (PWD) handed over its maintenance to the MPK. It was then closed to traffic following the completion of the current concrete Kota Bridge that runs parallel to it. At present, the bottom deck of the original Kota Bridge is used as a pedestrian walkway. ![]() Kota Bridge Trishaw riders and motorcyclists find it convenient as it links Jalan Tepi Sungai (Pengkalan Batu) to Jalan Pasar near the Emporium Makan. The top deck is closed to traffic as part of it was dismantled on Jan 21, 1992. Dorman Long Engineering Ltd, the British firm that had built the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, started work on the original Kota Bridge in 1957. The Klang bridge was completed in 1960 and opened by the late Selangor Sultan Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in 1961 in conjunction with his coronation as the 9th Sultan of Selangor. “Structurally deficient means that certain parts of the bridge need to be repaired or replaced. Overall inspection on the structure has to be carried out on the joints,” Mohamad said. “Corrosion is occurring in areas designed for expansions and contraction where rain water is trapped and together with the humid conditions has caused certain parts of the steel beam to rust,’’ he said. Yesterday, Mohamad inspected the steel beams of the bridge from a boat. He said there was no reason for those using the bridge to worry as MPK would seek the expertise of PWD bridge engineers to rectify the problem. “We may close the bridge as a precaution and carry out the necessary checks,” Mohamad said. He said the lay person might think that it was a small matter but, based on engineering standards, weaknesses in joints or cracks in the bridge could cause one of the steel beams to break, although it might not lead to a collapse. According Mohamad, with right maintenance and regular change of bolts and nuts, the old icon could have its life span extended. ![]() Easy route: Students using the Kota Bridge to return home after school while motorists use it as a convenient link to Jalan Pasar or Jalan Tepi Sungai. “One of the main tests to be done is to conduct measurements to ascertain the integrity of the beams and trusses to see if the bridge is strong enough,” he said. “We need to monitor component behaviour and conduct vibration tests because the bridge parallel to it contributes a certain amount of vibration due to a high traffic volume,” he said. According to Mohamad, the initial rehabilitation of Kota Bridge would cost about RM160,000. |

Klang Gets Third Bridge Over Klang River
KLANG, March 4 (Bernama) -- A third bridge is to be built over the Klang river here under a RM230-million project to be completed in 2-1/2 years. Work on the project, which would form a part of the Klang Ring Road, is to begin in four months, said Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu after the launch of the project here by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo. "The plans and designs for the project have been completed and the tender will be called soon," Samy Vellu told reporters. The project involves the construction of a bridge of 0.5km and two kilometres of new road and upgrading of 1.3km of existing road, he said, adding that the new bridge would reduce traffic congestion on the Kota and Musaedin bridges. Samy Vellu said his ministry had identified a link road in Klang cutting across Jalan Meru up to Jalan Sungai Udang, which would have four interchanges. Earlier, in his speech at the launch, the minister said the 3.8km bridge project would stimulate growth of industrial sites and development in Klang and raise the socio-economic standard of the people. He also said that the ministry was planning a fourth bridge to facilitate users of the West Coast Expressway heading into Klang and going from Klang to Banting. -- BERNAMA |

Jalan tengku Kelana menawarkan 1,001 produk, khususnya dibawa terus dari India KLANG: Jika di Brickfields di Kuala Lumpur menjadi jolokan Little India, penduduk di Bandar DiRaja juga tidak ketinggalan dengan keunikan Jalan Tengku Kelana yang menjadi tumpuan pelbagai kaum membeli belah dan menikmati keunikan budaya kaum India di negara ini. Juga dikenali sebagai Little India, apa yang ditawarkan mungkin hampir sama dengan apa yang boleh diperoleh di Brickfields, namun kedudukan kedai dan gedung di jalan itu menyebabkan ia kelihatan lebih intim dan menyeronokkan. Sebenarnya, Little India di Klang bukan hanya tertumpu di Jalan Tengku Kelana, sebaliknya ia juga membabitkan jalan dan lorong di sekitar Jalan Tengku Kelana. Deretan kedai dan gedung di bangunan pra merdeka dan pasca merdeka itu bukan saja memberikan peluang kepada pengunjung membeli belah pelbagai jenis perhiasan diri, fabrik dan perkakasan rumah, ia juga membawa bersamanya budaya dan kepercayaan kaum India di negara ini yang diamalkan sejak turun temurun. Melangkah saja ke Jalan Tengku Kelana, pengunjung boleh melihat kedai sari, kedai pakaian dan barangan perhiasan diri, di setiap cerok dan sudut. Tidak kira sama ada ia gedung besar dengan beberapa cawangan ataupun sekadar kedai kecil milik pengusaha persendirian, ia tetap menawarkan pelbagai jenis fabrik dan pakaian paa harga yang menepati kemampuan setiap pengunjung. Bukan pelik atau asing jika ada pengusaha kedai yang menawarkan fabrik sutera India pada harga antara RM20 hingga ribuan ringgit untuk sesiapa saja yang mampu dan mahu membeli. KEDAI kain sari dari India menjadi tumpuan. Tidak cukup dengan fabrik, pelbagai aksesori turut dipamerkan untuk tatapan dan pilihan pembeli, agar pakaian yang akan disiapkan lebih menarik. Sudah penat membeli belah, pengunjung boleh juga singgah di mana-mana restoran 'daun pisang' yang menawarkan makanan India Selatan yang boleh juga dinikmati pengunjung beragama Islam. Selain menikmati makanan India Selatan yang dihidangkan di atas daun pisang, pengunjung boleh juga menikmati pemanis mulut terdiri daripada pelbagai kuih dan makanan manis seperti laddu dan jalabi yang selalunya dijual di restoran 'daun pisang'. Jika tidak mahu menikmati di kedai yang sama, ada juga penjual yang menjualnya di gerai tepi jalan di kawasan itu. Timbunan makanan manis yang diperbuat daripada susu, pelbagai jenis kacang dan bijirin dengan pelbagai warna menambah keunikan Little India. Selain itu, mereka juga boleh mendapatkan perkhidmatan tukang gunting rambut yang sudah beroperasi sejak sekian lama. Seorang penduduk Klang, Wani Muthiah, berkata Little India sering dianggap penduduk di Klang terutama kaum India tempatan sebagai pusta sehenti untuk semua urusan seharian. Katanya, walaupun ramai yang melihat Little India sebagai satu tempat untuk mencari sari dan sutera India yang cantik dan berkualiti, ia sebenarnya menawarkan lebih banyak kemudahan kepada penduduk setempat. Daripada pakaian, perkakasan rumah hingga kepada peralatan untuk ibadat bagi kaum India beragama Hindu, semua boleh diperoleh di sini. Wani berkata, ramai yang tidak mengetahui banyak barangan keperluan seharian boleh dibeli di Little India dengan harga yang berpatutan kerana kebanyakannya dibawa masuk secara langsung dan pukal tanpa melalui orang tengah daripada India. "Harga bawang merah yang dibeli di sini juga lebih murah berbanding jika dibeli di pasar di kawasan lain. Begitu juga dengan kacang dal berkualiti yang dibawa masuk terus daripada India. "Ramai kaum India juga gemar membeli belah di Little India kerana mereka boleh mendapatkan sayur-sayuran yang digemari kaum India di sini serta gula perang dari India. "Mereka juga boleh membeli periuk diperbuat daripada keluli buatan India yang lebih tahan lasak pada harga murah di sini," katanya. Biarpun ada usaha untuk memartabatkan Brickfields sebagai Little India di negara ini, Wani berkata, masyarakat India lebih gemar berkunjung ke Jalan Tengku Kelana berikutan ia mempunyai lebih banyak kedai dan gedung beli belah. Katanya, walaupun Brickfields turut dikunjungi masyarakat India, lebih banyak pilihan boleh diperoleh di Jalan Tengku Kelana, selan kawasan itu tidak sibuk dengan kenderaan. Beliau berkata, kedudukan kedai yang berdekatan antara satu dengan lain juga memudahkan segala urusan diselesaikan dalam tempoh yang singkat serta kawasan itu banyak kawasan letak kereta untuk memudahkan pengunjung. "Memang menjadi kebiasaan bagi kaum India dari negeri lain membuat rombongan beli belah ke Jalan Tengku Kelana setiap kali menjelang perayaan Deepavali bagi membuat persediaan menyambut perayaan itu. "Mereka akan menginap di hotel berdekatan selama sehari dan keluar membeli pelbagai barangan keperluan dan persiapan untuk menyambut perayaan itu sebelum kembali semula ke negeri masing-masing," katanya. Berkunjung ke Little India juga bukan sekadar membolehkan pengunjung membawa pulang makanan, pakaian dan perkakasan rumah. Pengunjung juga berpeluang untuk merasai sendiri kehidupan masyarakat India di negara inidaripada cara berpakaian, cara mereka berurusan, makanan dan perhiasan. Malah, menurut Wani, masyarakat lain boleh melihat sendiri bagaimana kaum India meraikan perayaan mereka dengan berkunjung ke Little India kerana kebiasaannya kesibukan di kawasan itu berganda menjelang perayaan Deepavali, Thaipusam dan Ponggal. Katanya, memang menjadi kebiasaan untuk peniaga membuka gerai menjual manisan dan pelabagai peralatan dan barangan yang digunakan untuk upacara keagamaan di tepi jalan di Little India untuk kemudahan pengunjung. Beliau berkata, penunjung terutama pengunjung yang beragama Islam juga tidak perlu bimbang untuk menjamah makanan di restoran yang beroperasi di situ kerana mereka ada menjual makanan daripada sayur-sayuran serta tidak memasak makanan yang tidak halal seperti daging khinzir. Katanya, makanan lain seperti ayam dan daging juga selalunya diperoleh daripada sumber yang halal kerana kebanyakan peniaga sedar ramai pengunjung beragama Islam turut mengunjungi premis mereka. Misalnya, menjelang perayaan Ponggal baru-baru ini, pengunjung boleh melihat pokok tebu dan pokok kunyit dijual di setiap cerok dan sudut di Little India selain gerai menjual manisan dan bunga-bungaan. Suasana di kawasan iu juga lebih meriah dengan pengunjung dan penjual tidak sabar-sabar untuk meraikan perayaan yang bakal menjelang. INFO: Little India Peruntukan sebanyak RM3 juta disediakan dalam Rancangan Malaysia Ke-Sembilan (RMK-9) untuk menaik taraf beberapa kemudahan di kawasan itu untuk menarik pengunjung. Banyak pusat tarikan pelancong di sekitar kawasan itu seperti Padang Chetty, Gedung Raja Abdullah, Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz, Masjid India, Kuil Nattakotai. Kedai dan gedung di Little India akan dihias pemilik premis yang bergotong-royong untuk bersama-sama emncantik dan memeriahkan suasana di kawasan itu menjelang Deepavali. Pengunjung boleh datang menggunakan kenderaan sendiri yang diletakkan di kawasan berhampiran, menaiki bas atau menaiki komuter dan berhenti di hentian Klang, tidak jauh dari Little India. |

Tune-ing in to properties
By Presenna Nambiar Published: 2008/04/18 ![]() The Harbour Place in Klang will be Tune Group's first project, comprising a shopping mall and an office suite tower with a gross development value of RM420 million TUNE Group, famous for popularising the budget business model, is going into properties. Its first project is a shopping complex and office building in Klang, a town known for its ports that are the nation's trading gateway. Tune Group will hold all its property business under Tune Properties, following a restructuring exercise that will be completed within a year. "The Harbour Place in Klang will be our first project under Tune Properties. From there, we will expand into other types of properties," Datuk Kamarudin Meranun told Business Times in a phone interview recently. Kamarudin and Datuk Tony Fernandes are the founders of Tune Group, which now owns Asia's biggest budget airline, low-cost hotel operator Tune Hotels, and financial services provider Tune Money, to name a few. Kamarudin hinted that Tune Properties might have a more diverse portfolio. The group will hire Tan Eng Wah, the former director of Tan & Tan Development Bhd, to run Tune Properties. Tan has more than 25 years of experience in the property business, encompassing hotels, shopping complexes and even hospitals. Strategically located along the main Klang highway connecting Klang town and Port Klang, Harbour Place will be positioned as a suburban shopping complex to serve the mushrooming Klang neighbourhoods. It is targeted to open by the third or fourth quarter of this year. Kamarudin currently holds 63 per cent of Chestar Properties Sdn Bhd, the owner, developer and operator of the project. The entire project, which comprises a shopping mall and an office suite tower, has a gross development value of RM420 million. Kamarudin said the whole idea would be in line with the philosophy of Tune Group, which is to offer affordable products and services to an underserved market. He said Harbour Place is a classic example of such a venture. "You find that there are hardly any quality shopping malls in Klang, while Kuala Lumpur is almost bursting with such complexes," Kamarudin said. Other private initiatives under the Tune brand are Tune Talk, Tune Entertainment, Tune Games and Tune Media. |
