Part 13: continuing the ascent to the Castle.

William Randolph Hearst also built an airport that allowed flights on board DC-3s to bring in celebrities and guests invited by Hearst.

Part 14: still continuing the climb to the Castle.

Part 15: finally arriving at the base of the Castle.

Part 15: at the base of the Castle, getting ready for the first tour, Designing the Dream. First up: a first glimpse of the Neptune Pool.

Fantastic tour, FOD! I've always wanted to see inside the Hearst Castle! I think it is a bit mean of them to make you pay three or four times to see it all, though. Your photos are beautifully taken and really well organized!

ps I was curious, so watched the movie trailer of "Ang Tanging Ina Mo" on Youtube! Looks fun, but I can't speak Tagalog!

No, that's fine because so many people visit that famous Castle (it is designated as both a State and National Monument, along with the property itself being a California State Park), and that the Hearst family personally requested to preserve the beauty and legacy W.R. Hearst left behind. With a huge property to go around, it takes quite a long time to go through the entire thing... As described earlier, most tours could last 45 minutes; the first tour I took lasted nearly 2 hours, hence the amount of photos to share! I'll tell you, though: for all its architectural richness and so many antiquities featured, from the Greek and Roman columns, to the Gothic-style bell towers modeled after a set of belfries in Spain, this landmark is really worth a visit indeed, especially during the summer. And by the way, we were only like 13 people in the first tour, compared to like 30 to 40 on the Grand Rooms Tour.

And speaking of the Filipino movie Ang Tanging Ina Mo, it is actually a series of three movies, featuring the undisputed queen of Philippine comedy, Ms. Ai Ai delas Alas. The one we watched was the last of the three, which features a mum about to "pass away" from cancer, and that her 10 or so children have had to prepare for it. Even her best friend (Eugene Domingo) couldn't stand what the doctors told her friend that she arranged for so many exercise instructors to help deal with her situation! And, you can find the full movie with subtitles now; just ask a Filipino shop selling DVDs.

Thanks! Actually, Hearst Castle is more like along the Central California coast, along with Monterey Bay (sometimes clumped with Northern California), Big Sur, and Santa Barbara. Southern California, on the other hand, starts in Ventura County all the way down to San Diego. It depends, though, on who you ask... And stay tuned because on the next parts, I will show the interiors of the castle.

My apologies for not providing updates yesterday... I'll make it up today with even more images from Hearst Castle.

Part 16: even more images from the Neptune Pool.

Part 17: climbing up to the castle via the gardens, heading first to the House of the Sun. One of the three smaller properties adjacent to the main castle, this house provided guests with stunning views of sunset as the rooms faced the Pacific Coast.

Part 18: continuing a tour inside the House of the Sun. This home, first built in 1925, contained some of the latest and greatest innovations and designs at the time, and with Hearst's love of antiques, he used some of them as accents and designs in the bedrooms and dressing rooms.

Part 20: still making our way through the House of the Sun. If you've noticed a small sliver of gray floor on the previous set set against the original floor design, don't be surprised. That mat is the designated pathway to use when touring inside the properties because the Hearst family wants to preserve the original floors, artwork, and antiques W.R. Hearst chosen and designed with Julia Morgan for generations to come, and such antiques and old floors are pretty fragile, wear very easily, and are costly to maintain that using flash in photography is not permitted while walking inside the houses (most especially the Main House, later on).

Since I haven't posted any views from several parts back, here's another chance you'll get to see a view shot, from the House of the Sun.

So for today, we'll go even deeper into the heart of Hearst Castle, in which you will discover what he wanted his guest rooms to be like. So far, we've seen quite a strong European influence in most of the rooms covered... but, there's much more to it.

Part 26:

Part 27: still in one of the Castle's 165 rooms... you'd imagine how much antiques were placed in each room, but as the tour guide described, W.R. Hearst managed to use only ten percent of all the antiques he collected and bought for many years just for the Castle and his other properties alone, with the rest in storage somewhere near the property. And by the way, this particular bedroom was actually built in two parts: in the previous set, you might notice there is a "bump" on the wall where a wide wooden chair is located (image DSC01738), in which that was the location of the original wall of the Castle (north side) before it was extended further to accommodate a theater downstairs; in turn, the rest of the floors had extra space, resulting in more rooms in the process.

Part 28: heading into a part of the Castle's extension... the best part of being a guest of William Randolph Hearst in his castle was that, when a visitor didn't bring in his own bathing suit, towel, or jacket, Hearst will personally bring in one of his aides to one of the many clothing rooms and get whatever he or she needs to make his or her stay as comfortable and fun as possible. For the same purpose, he has built dressing rooms in every large and small bath for the guests' use and privacy.

The rug prominently displayed on this picture is made of pure silk, and has been imported from Persia (now Iran).
