woah, that's a narrow platform. I hope the station sin't used by many - and that there are plans to widen it.

It's fairly busy, though in peaks is very board n/bound/alight s/bound, so copes somewhat as there's no conflicts. It's also a bit wider than the picture makes out, but it is rather narrow.

There's another one like that (can't remember Clapham North or South). Euston was like it until the Victoria line came, and Angel like it until 1991.

Antje: Seeing trains coming or departing in some pictures would be good.

Clapham North. My home page has the photos that are in the queue, with more to follow.

That was my local station when growing up in South London; it didn't seem nearly so narrow when I lived there. I'm pretty sure it hasn't shrunk! I imagine they'll 'do an Angel' on those two stations one day when funds are available.

Even during rush hours I don't recall there being any accidents when the platform was packed, but I think I may have heard of one or two incidents over the years.

The H&C line in West London is on a viaduct as mentioned by Antje. There's lots of stations on embankments, so above ground level and you go up stairs to them - West Harrow and North Harrow, for instance.

There are no New York/Chicago style 'el's where the track is elevated along a road.

It may be an oddity in London, but it's part of the Subway experience in Glasgow! Add that to the narrower tubes and the smaller trains, and you feel like a giant!

London's system is of course, much much more used, much larger and much more impressive. I love that picture of Clapham Common. What's the other island station on the tube? IIRC, there's two, aren't there?
