Virgin Media Extend Free London Underground WiFi Service

Virgin Media installed a free WiFi network in the London Underground shortly before the Olympics began in June. The original plan was to offer tourists and visitors to the games a free way to access mobile broadband on the internet.

Virgin Media then intended to then start charging for use of the network when London 2012 concluded. However, Virgin Media have now announced that the free WiFi network will be available until the end of 2012 !

This is great news for regular commuters and visitors to London because it enables you to visit social networks, check your emails and watch videos while travelling on the tube. 120 stations are expected to be concluded before the end of 2012 , so the coverage is pretty comprehensive.

Next year Virgin Media are expected to make the WiFi service free to all Virgin Media broadband and mobile customers, which is a nice bonus. However, those who arn't Virgin Media customers will have to pay for the service and no details about the price have been announced.

London Underground: driverless Tube trains must go ahead, call

Boris Johnson will today be urged to "reaffirm his commitment" to
introducing driverless Tube trains. It follows the Evening Standard story last week when it was revealed that Tube bosses have ruled out driverless trains for the forseeable future.

The Mayor will be questioned by Richard Tracey, Greater London Authority (GLA) Tory group transport spokesman and a leading campaigner for driverless trains.

He will say in the light of the report that Transport for London (TfL) has "cooled" on the idea he would like the Mayor to "set the record straight." Mr Tracey said: "Driverless trains are a safer, more efficient, faster alternative to today's operation of the Underground.

"Such systems are used on various metro systems, both old and new, around the world and the time has come for London to embrace them. I believe driverless trains, on which I published a report, will play an integral part in boosting the Tube's capacity and investing in them is what Londoners want their Mayor to do."

The Mayor has constantly repeated his support for driverless trains. London Underground (LU) says trains will continue to have drivers until well into the 2020s. New stock of 191 trains now being delivered for the Metropolitan, District, Circle and Hammersmith & City lines will all have drivers cabs and be driven in the conventional way.

There had been proposals to begin testing two driverless trains this month on the Jubilee line - at night and not when passenger trains were running - between Waterloo and Stratford but this won't happen.

There are no plans for any further purchase of new trains - without drivers cabs - "at this time," says LU.

Although the Victoria, Jubilee, Central and Northern lines already run in semi-automatic mode they will not be converted and continue to be driver operated.

Mike Brown, LU managing director, said: "We have always made clear that we will continue to explore new technology as it develops - in common with every other metro around the world and this is what we are doing.

London Reconnections has a report on the London Assembly Transport Committee which transcribes what was said on driverless trains, which is far more informative than the mainstream press.

Quoted from the London Reconnections website:

“So, it was purely press speculation?”

“So it would seem.”
Yet more jumping to conclusions by the press. I think ATC is as far as we are going to get for a system with very tight tunnels. It's not like the DLR.
