Whilst the Bakerloo currently has spare capacity at this end, it may well attract enough new passengers (especially after all the new housing developments along the OK road) to ensure that it's a whole lot busier. Even if this doesn't prove to be the case, at least getting the line to Lewisham is a more realistic goal funding wise, as trying to green-light a much more expensive extension to Hayes or wherever would be harder to do, what with CR2 also being a major priority.

I thought Lewisham to Hayes/Beckenham Jnc. were easy extensions (convertion of an isolated existing line) with the huge benefit of relieving London Bridge for surburban services. I agree though let's concentrate on the inner part first, where development potential can help the economic case.

Well technically yes: only a bit of tunnelling required to bring the line to the surface presumably just beyond Lewisham; but even an above ground conversion on this scale would obviously add significantly to the overall cost than just the bit to Lewisham alone, even though the tunnelled bit per kilometre, plus stations, is clearly way more expensive. And as I said, the line might be rammed just being extended to Lewisham and terminating there.

Some other lines with proposed extensions never happened, in some cases because of funding, but also because the existing line was already full, such as Victoria beyond Brixton; though a loop line extension to Herne Hill has been mooted to increase capacity as this is a real problem at Brixton with the current track layout.

If it becomes a case of a modest extension to Lewisham being more likely to get green lit then at least such a concession will be able to determine whether there is actual capacity to extend further in the future.

This passenger capacity issue is a reason why they dropped Haykerloo last year.

Other reasons include:
- cost (as you say)
- the lack of a need to remove a branch from SE Metro services to keep frequencies down from Lewisham high enough
> add in TfL's notions that more trains than Network Rail think can terminate at Cannon Street, that Thameslink will be supplying 2tph to the Dartford loops, and that TfL were proposing more Lewisham-Victoria trains = service levels from beyond Lewisham could be improved a little without needing a branch removed.
- if you've maxed out line capacity on Bakerloo, DLR and NR between Lewisham and zone 1 all that additional trains from further out are doing is getting passengers to there quicker.

The current track layout can turn round a train every 100 seconds - it's not a problem. It's dwell times at places like Victoria, Oxford Circus and Kings Cross that are the bigger problems with running more trains.

From Metro Report

London Underground Northern Line extension tunnelling to start in March
20 Jan 2017

UK: Mayor of London Sadiq Khan announced on January 20 that tunnelling on London Underground’s Northern Line extension to Battersea is to begin in March.

Two tunnel boring machines supplied by NFM Technologies have been unveiled at Battersea and are undergoing final tests. They were shipped from NFM’s factory at Le Creusot in France before being reassembled in London earlier this month. Each 650 tonne TBM can bore up to 30 m per day and requires a team of 50 people to operate. The TBMs have been named Helen and Amy after astronaut Helen Sharman and aviator Amy Johnson

New entrance proposed for Stratford tube station

A new eastern side entrance to Stratford station has been approved, which will see easier access to the station from the side streets to the north of Stratford High Street.

Once completed, the 500m journey that current Carpenters Estate residents have to walk from Gibbins Road to the Westbound Central Line Platform, will be reduced to 150m once the new entrance is open

Tram track upgrade work to take place in February
23 January 2017

Transport for London is advising customers that, due to track replacement work, Tram services between Wimbledon and Mitcham will not operate from 11 February through to 20 February.

The work, which is part of the Tram network's regular maintenance programme, will involve replacing 750 metres of track between Morden Road and Merton Park, as well as replacing both track and signals in the Dundonald Road crossing area, which will also involve the closure of the road. During this time a road diversion route will be in operation

IIRC the CL stock would not enter service until 2027 -30 therefore by then the 92 stock would be considered as reaching end of life

Weren't the 92s designed on the cheap and with a deliberately lower service life, so that it would be easier to replace than refurbish them?
