The upside was I got to sit down and have a quick beer.
Today I've used it.

Once you alight at Terrassa station if you come with the R4 train from Barcelona, to get to FGC you only need to go up the stairs from the platform, and once upstairs, turn left instead of going through the old fare barriers on the right.

You follow the new corridor that leads to the new entrance hall, common to Renfe and FGC, with ticket machines of both companies. You leave the Renfe fare barriers, and you can either follow upstairs to the street, or go through the FGC fare barriers to the new FGC platforms.

I haven't liked a lot the new FGC platforms there, a bit chaotic, and the platforms are short, they only allow 4-car EMUs, so if ever there is a traffic increase, a huge amount of money will be needed to lengthen the platforms.

From there I went to the new S1 terminus Terrassa-Nacions Unides, which I liked better, a bit more room and better conceived transition between platforms and street, yet again short platforms.

From there I went to Volpelleres to change to Rodalies line R8 to go back to Tarragona, so the train went through Vallparadís-Universitat station, where I didn't alight, but I could see that platforms are rather narrow (and 4-car only too).

The upside, to me, was that even though it was August 2 and a Sunday evening, there were a number of people taking a look at the station halls and asking questions to the FGC staff that were giving advice to passengers at the ticket machines.
Another good point was that the stations were not as STIFLING HOT as some inner Barcelona stations.

Isn't the entire network built for 4 car trains? Since this is not an isolated line, running longer trains would require rebuilding all the other stations to, something I can't see would ever happen.

Since every train theoretically can carry 700+ people, that means that with just higher frequency you can transport 20000+ people per hour in each direction. I don't think Terrassa will ever see even 10000, maybe during the annual festival and the occasional snowstorm.

Not exactly.

Traditionally, the network was built for 2-car trains, then easily expanded to 3-car trains on both the urban and suburban lines.

Later on, the need for a fourth car appeared on the suburban lines, so the surface stations were quickly adapted, while the old underground stations had to undergo some wonky surgery to cram the fourth car in. Some still don't entirely allow the fourth car, be it in part (Plaça Catalunya), or at all (Peu del Funicular).

But the newer underground stations from the 1980s had been built for 5-car or 6-car trains (can't remember which length).

So I was hoping that they'd keep that.

After all, on the other FGC network, platforms allow for 6-car trains, and some trains have 6 cars (although most have just 3 cars).

It might happen in the end. Not in the near future, sure, but thinking big always helps, otherwise you have to spend more than you should in revamping things.

Oh, seen from that point of view, yes, but...

And besides, the platforms at Vallparadís station are not just short, they're narrow, and that's the one that should have the widest platforms.

The Montserrat Rack Railway just north of Barcelona is a modern train winding its way up the mountain to the Montserrat Abbey. It is wonderful for a day trip as it is connected to Barcelona via train the whole way! Up at the top are incredible views and hiking trails. My video is a time-lapse video of the descent down the mountain.

SPANISH infrastructure manager Adif has awarded a consortium of Alstom and Bombardier a €72.7m contract to install and maintain ERTMS on a 56km stretch of Barcelona's Rodalies suburban rail network

The contract covers the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of GSM-R and ETCS Level 2 on the section of Rodalies Line R1 between L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Mataró. This section has 15 stations and includes the busy tunnel between Barcelona Sants and Clot-Aragó

Upgrade works at Sant Joan Despí station (lines R1/R4).

-platforms have been lengthened.
-underpass is being rebuilt.
-shelters are being built (despite it being in zone 1, it didn't have big shelters, only two bus-stop-like ones).

-Castellbell i el Vilar-Monistrol (line R4).
-Lavern-Subirats (line R4).
-Passeig de Gràcia (line R2).

More upgrades have been announced but not started yet:

-Granollers-Centre (lines R2/R8).
-Els Monjos (line R4).
-Vacarisses-Torreblanca (line R4).
-Vacarisses (line R4).

...by the way, the ministry is discussing with the different local authorities a plan to double-tracking line R3 between Parets del Vallès and La Garriga stations...

...and incidentally, test runs have started on the new FGC Sabadell extension (on line S2), between Sabadell-Estació and Sabadell-Plaça Major.

Opening date has been announced: September 12.

We'll have to wait until next year for the remaining three underground stations of the FGC Sabadell extension.

Really hoping they'll keep the name Sabadell-Nord for the connecting station with R4.
I don't like different names for one station.

Interesting video showing a partially lost area of the Barcelona rail network.

It's the old section of what now is called line R1, between Estació de França and Sant Adrià de Besòs, through the old Poble Nou station. It was closed in 1991.

You can see many class 440 (now class 470) and 436 EMU's, but also a few other Talgo and freight trains.

This area is now completely redeveloped, and Estació de França still works, but without any northbound train and almost half the platforms it used to have.

The article is mistaken, as only two stations have been officially inaugurated today. They will enter into service tomorrow, and the other three stations of the underground extension in Sabadell will open in spring 2017.

A part from that, the strecht from Sarrià to Reina Elisenda is called L12 since today.

Here is the new map with all those changes:
