Line R3.
Parets del VallŔs station.

Trains usually cross here, since line R3 is single-track.
Trains bound for Barcelona usually get really crowded after they leave this station, longer trains on line R3 would be a good idea.

Badalona station.

By now it┤s not connected to the metro yet (although metro L2 is not that far from here on foot), but it is planned that sometime in the future metro L1 will be extended till here, creating a very important interchange point.

Line R1.
Between Badalona and Montgat.

Trains are very frequent here (a train every five minutes during the peak hours).
Although the line in not very well isolated, there┤s a good number of underpasses and overpasses in this particular sector, which is entirely urban.

A coupling of two class 464 EMUs on a north-bound train calling at the station, then leaving.

A coupling of two class 447 EMUs on another north-bound train calling, then leaving, this time from the other platform.
Plus a coupling of two class 464 EMUs on a south-bound train doing the same, and a second coupling of 447 EMUs on a north-bound train arriving.

Granollers-Canovelles station.

Here we see a few morning north and south bound trains, all served by class 447 EMUs, sometimes in single (three-coach), or coupled (six-coach).

One of them departing from the station (some trains initiate/terminate here), and another rushing past (the only one in the day that doesn┤t call here, since it┤s direct between Vic and Barcelona).

A few R3 services go beyond Vic into the Pyrenees (Ripoll, Ribes de Freser, Puigcerda and also Latour-de-Carol in France).

Sant Andreu Comtal station.

This station is the only one in Barcelona city to keep its original building from the 1850s. But it shouldn┤t last long, a new underground station is in Works as part of the Barcelona-Perpignan HSL and the new Sagrera station complex, which will include a new AVE/TGV depot.

Talking about depots, Sant Andreu Comtal is still one of the main depots in Barcelona (for regional rail and Talgo), but they shouldn┤t last long, they┤ll go the same way as the current passenger station.

The current station has now only two tracks, and all services are through trains.
Before the start of works, many R2 services and also regional trains had their terminus here, and the station had many more platforms.

There is an oficial interchange with Sant Andreu L1 metro station, but it┤s located 200 m away on foot, at Plaša Orfila... not good on rainy days.

Lines R1, R2.
Barcelona-La Sagrera (under construction).

This will be the main Barcelona station. Once it┤s finished, of course...

Right now it┤s just a big hole, but as some bridges cross over it, it┤s ok for trainspotting a bit...

are the works on stand-by? I would have expected to see hundreds of workers in such a big and important construction site

Not exactly.

The works go on, both at Sagrera and at Sant Andreu Comtal, but very slowly and with few people.

Besides, the Roman villa that was found at Sagrera was rather big, more than expected.
They found a beautiful mosaic. And old, they found a prehistorical burial site too.
It┤s not that strange, since Sagrera station is located right next to the old village of Sant MartÝ de Provenšals (one of the villages absorbed by Barcelona).
Funny that one of the oldest quarters in the city is now absolutely surrounded by 'francoblocks' (except for the station side, where there is a park).

As you can imagine, that (and the crisis ) halted the works quite a bit.

Services beyond Vic.

Some services in line R3 go beyond Vic, as far as Ripoll, Ribes de Freser, Puigcerda, and Latour-de-Carol in France.
It is a case of merged services.
Regional rail trains are used as commuter trains inside the integrated ticket area.

Here we can see some class 447 EMUs (which by the way are totally inadequate for the regional service) at Manlleu station and between Vic and Manlleu, the first one after Vic in the direction of Latour-de-Carol.

And you could see the two tubes of the line.
Rails are already in place.

The station entrance can be seen in hindsight, still in works.
This is going to be very busy, since it will serve a university, some of the most central quarters in Terrassa, including the old town, and a hospital too, iirc.

Between Sant AdriÓ de Bes˛s and Barcelona-La Sagrera.

Right after Sant AdriÓ de Bes˛s station, line R1 crosses river Bes˛s through this bridge.
In this sector, the line runs parallel to tramway lines T4 and T6.
After the bridge, the line has a sharp bend to the right as it goes towards Barcelona-La Sagrera and Barcelona-El Clot-Aragˇ.

Lines R1, R3, R4.
L┤Hospitalet de Llobregat station.

Open since 1854, but massively upgraded in the 1970s.

This station is currently is works. The track layout of the through tracks is being heavily modified, and meanwhile it┤s being adapted for the handicapped.
Some of the tracks at the bay platforms are being upgraded too (about time, they were falling to pieces!).
The height of some platforms is being upgraded to the stantard 68 cm above the rail.

This is the terminus for all R3 trains, and also for certain R4 trains, for more than half of the R1 trains, and also for some regional services for Ripoll, Ribes de Freser, Puigcerda, Latour-de-Carol (France), and Lleida (via Manresa and Cervera).
It used to be the ancient terminus for nearly all R7 services until that line was curtailed to Sant Andreu Arenal (the station is saturated).

It also sees R1 through services (for Molins de Rei, only Mondays to Fridays), and R4 through services (for Molins de Rei, Martorell, Vilafranca del PenedŔs and Sant Vicenš de Calders).

It┤s also a rather important interchange for metro L1 station called Rambla Just Oliveras, located just outside the entrance.

At peak hours, it may get a train every three minutes in each direction (or even less in degraded situation).

Needless to say, this is, as far as exploitation goes, the key point of the whole Rodalies network. Not in passengers though, albeit it obviously is quite busy.

Lines R4, R8.
Castellbisbal station.

Open since 1856, heavily upgraded in the 1980s.

Another key point of the network, but in this case for freight.
All freight trains coming from the Barcelona port bound for the rest of Spain have to go through this station.

As for commuter rail, it┤s far less important, although it is the junction between lines R4 and R8.

It┤s not very busy anyway, because it┤s far away from town (Castellbisbal is up on a hill, and the station is down the valley), although it has a bus link to town.

It gets a good service though, around one train every 20 minutes in each direction, although intervals are irregular.

And it is in good state, with higher non-step-free platforms, underpass, and lifts.

The station is located right next to the Madrid-Barcelona HSL, so it┤s a favourite among trainspotters...

The station will start rather heavy upgrade works very soon, as the third rail (normal gauge) will be installed here to allow freight trains from France into further away in Spain. The station building and platforms shouldn┤t be touched, though.
