[LT] Architecture of Lithuania in 1918-1940

After the end of World War I state of Lithuania was restored, but not in a large territory of former Grand Duchy of Lithuania which existed in 1240-1795.
First buildings architecture was similar to prewar architecture, but later began to dominate modernism ("Bauhaus"), functionalism architecture. This thread will present the Lithuanian state architecture in 1918-1940 (in 1940 started soviet occupation), which had only a little more than 2 million people.

Some examples:

Kauno "Pienocentro" rūmai
Built in 1934
Architect: Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, Karolis Reisonas

www.archata.lt

Žydų bankas (Jewish bank) in Kaunas
Architect: Grigorijus Mazelis, Mikas Grodzenskis
built in 1925

Destroyed in soviet years

www.eilatgordinlevitan.com

Prisikėlimo bažnyčia (Church of Resurrection) in Kaunas
Architect: Karolis Reisonas
Started to built in 1933, the construction was not completed until the Soviet occupation. During the years of Nazi occupation, the church was turned into a paper warehouse. In 1952, the building was adjusted to a radio factory, and was only returned to the believers in 1988, construction works were completed in 2006 only.

I visited this building and I was amazed that it is from 1936. It looked like example of Soviet concrete neo-monumentalism from 1960s and 1970s.

Anyway, Kaunas is extremely nice for every modernism lover

If it for you simmilar for soviet architecture than there is something bad with your eye to modernism architecture.

You know, some modern functionalism-style buildings resemble post-war architecture and vice versa, particular it's minimalistic manner. That's not a problem.
Even you can find quite similar elements to brutalism style in museum's facade. But frankly, this museum is one of the finest examples of interwar public museums probably in all Europe, not only in Kaunas. It has less art deco, but as we know, art deco as a style is very rare in all North Europe region.
By the way, three big figures - Vladimiras Dubeneckis, Karolis Reisonas, Kazimieras Kriščiukaitis - were involved in museums project. They were pro-functionalism architects.

Good point about monumentalism. Vladimiras Dubeneckis was famous for his "national revival" approach, so we can really see and maybe feel that.

Actually, post-war soviet architecture in Lithuania (and in all Batics) was a bit different than in other Soviet or commie countries. For instance, such buildings like National Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Museum, some highrises in Gediminas avenue and others do not remind soviet architecture per se; some of them, IMHO, look even better than similar building in some Western Europe's cities. We can also compare some commieblock districts in Vilnius/Kaunas to Stockholm/Helsinki districts.

What is interesting, Kaunas interwar architectural complex can become a part of Unesco heritage....Do not know this good or not.

If you are interested, here is a link of all primary/initial projects.

From outside, competetive project seems to be more gentle but I like the interior which is very raw and has that "lithuanian" feeling.
Very interesting anyway.

Sometimes competetive projects look "better" than realized ones. But that is most interesting thing - to imagine how they would look like today. Like Saarinen's projects... or some unrealized projects by V.Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, Karolis Reisonas, M. Songaila etc.
If You are talking about Officers House, it's kinda interesting building with interesting history. Officers House or Karinininkų Ramovė was a house/club that served to millitary personnel needs, mostly for leisure. It can not state that interior is very good - the main aim was to create something a la "Duke's Hall" "Temple of Perkūnas" (ala Valhala or in other words - from lithuanian mythology - "karžygių/milžinų menė") and so on and on..It was like a game.
On such occasions, architects sacrificed modern touch of functionalism conceptions/cutting-edge interior-traditions and based plans, details, element on quite borring "symbolism". You can notice some elements of national revival in interior. Not the best example of that time modern interwar interior in terms of modernity/innovative interior and examples from other states, but is really interesting. A bit different. Maybe old-fashioned, maybe architects emphasised to much on representative manner, had tryed, you know, to reflect the whole (romantic?) mindset of millitary personel, but imho some solutions that were used in the inner part of the building make it unique and "eye-catchy". As i have said, the aim of it was to create more or less representative, monumentalistic style of interior. The latter matter is very noticeable in earlier public building projects like Bank of Lithuania ar Justice/Parliament Building. later, in the mid of 30's, minimalistic style became essential and is still popular atm.

I think some interiors from postwar are better. Interior school and traditions are really strong and even today we are a bit crazy for good design, including interior (sadly, good design is expensive design). Yes, we can find some kitsch, but also, not anyone like scandinavian/nordics/italian/UK/etc design.
