@Ashis - the last closed section and removed of the network was in November 2013 between Bulgarian Orthodox Church Seminary to the Russian Embassy due to the construction of a bi-level interchange.

There are plans and all the needed technical drawings for extending/rebuilding the former line to Darvenitsa district (of which the above mentioned section is a part), but there seems to be a problem with the public opinion and there are some lobbyists against the extension. The matter should be resolved later this year.

Here are my last photos of the line before closure and removal:

The trams Type T8M-301 "Bulgaria 1300" are due to be fully phased out in March.

The photo was taken during the construction of Line 2 of the Sofia Metro.

Mixed feeling, first to bad feeling to see that route 18 is now closed , This was really a great alignment with reserved track, surrounded by trees an greeneries. This was not a good decision to close that route.

but good feelings are more. They are introcing new low floor rolling stocks, opened new route 23, and last but not least, reconstruction of track-bed, which reminds me our city. Kolkata has already reconstructed tram-track beds from cobblestone to concrete, since 2004, and almost all routes has changed already to concrete.

Although it is not fully intelligent, especiallya in wide roads, where we suffers much to catch a tram by crossing between moving buses and cars. Formerly, there was safety on the stops of reserved tracks.

Thanks to the authority to maintain this great tram network. One of the large network I've seen after Melbourne.

Let me join in with another picture of the first new rails (Type S49) on Bulgaria bvld. Right now they are connected with temporary fishplates, but the final track will be CWR.
