Sofia tram is only 1 year elder than the tram network of my city Kolkata, but main differences are - Sofia tram network is thrice large than Kolkata tram network, and they gradually updated rolling stocks, modernized the system, and today, although 3 routes have closed, but 5 routes have opened, and the network is very strong, one of the best in Europe, and a very good substitute with metro. The most interesting part is it has a small underground portion in NDK, like metro tunnel, although the metro tunnel and tram tunnel is completely different here.

Only the route 2 have closed which served I. Nikolova, but it was later extended and presently near this place, tram routes 10 and 18 are running. Previously route 12 was a peak hours service, but presently it is running as a regular route. Two more peak hours route 14 & 16 was also closed after opening of metro line 2. Later two MG routes (18 & 19) and three SG routes (20, 22, 23) opened, and the system became more stronger. The SG routes were opened in west Sofia, where metro construction was not appropriate because those places are not so much crowded to served by metro, so a faster SG tram network was selected. After opening metro system, route 7 was shortened, and route 6 were re-laid on a different route and also extended.

The most peculiar decision is that, some later routes were opened as SG, where the main old network was MG. My question is why those was applied? What was the problem to make these routes like other routes by SG ? Two different types of rolling stocks are not practical, because it will be incompatible with other routes, and transfer tram stocks from these routes to other routes will not possible. It will increase running cost. Are SG routes faster than MG routes?

In late 80's they started to build SG tracks probably with the idea to re-gauge the whole network in next years. But this is very expensive and it's not practical. Now only newly planned tracks will be in SG, but we are still waiting and waiting for them... There was also an idea to link line 22 (SG) with line 5 (MG) by tunnel under the city center, but this is utopia...
