I wouldn't be surprised if by the time everything's built they're all boxes.

I wonder why the base bears a striking resemblance to 1 WTC's. I wouldn't think David Childs would design something like that again intentionally.

I can't wait to see next week's design !

P.S.: The McD tower has a new design too. It now has a wavy base.

Lol! I hope there will be a new design. I think I'm not too crazy about it. Re: 35 Hudson

ah just give it up NY, don't fight it

the burj khalifa would probably end up 'another glass box' here

it has nice setbacks. a box is fine if you do it right. like use setbacks and a unique crown. look 225 w 57th is a box and it looks good.

Apparently you're not familiar with the host of cutting edge towers rising in NY. Anyway, this is not the final design.

This tower will continue to "shape shift" even after it is constructed!

Yeah I know right? Totally boring towers going up in New York ...

and many more. Poor New York, only building glass boxes.

It's not? I really like this one actually although I've liked them all...

New design is horrendous. Absolutely hideous. I suppose the $$$ for the extra floor space was too difficult to pass up. It now looks like a hybrid of a 1960's monster and a poor 21st century attempt at being interesting. A travesty of a combination.

Yes, the box is the predominant form built in NYC due to the grid, the zoning regulations, the need to maximize FAR, etc. Yes, nobody should be surprised to see developers want to maximize profit and it's up the regulators to change this. There are some exceptions going up now, but they are mainly ultra-luxurious residential towers.

Correct. The Khalifa would indeed most probably never be built in NYC, the land is far too valuable for such a design. It would indeed be more boxy if someone had the balls to justify a tower that high in NYC.

I don't hate it, especially if the curve that's apparent at the upper floors is pronounced.Since we're only seeing it from this angle, it's hard to say, but each of those "boxy" segment may have a curve on the opposite side -- it would seem to make sense with the pattern established by the upper two segments, with three boxy edges and one curved edge, rotating down the building. Sort of harkened back to the rotating setbacks of the very first design. And given the coloring, I think we can still expect a version of the "pleated" stone-and-glass facade, so these worries that it's "just a glass box" seem unfounded.

Not a huge fan of the crown, but like Lex says, it would be silly to get hung up on any particular element of this design; this tower has gone through more iterations than just about any I've seen. It will probably change again.
