I haven't seen this complex in person. The pictures leave me with an impression of something inhumane and offputting. I respect that the enormity of the office buildings reflects the hoped-for tenants' need for trading floors or similar uses, but even with the angles and protrusions, the featureless reflective glass facades seem designed to crush the passerby with their massiveness. In contrast, older structures like the ESB, Chrysler, Fred French bldg, and others are somehow uplifting and designed to better connect with the pedestrian. I really hope that the ground-level treatment proves me wrong and that they are a happy place to interact with.

Are you the best friend of erbse or something? Hudson Yards is the pinnacle of the modern office complex, and it is the absolute opposite of crushing - it is empowering in both its massiveness and clean perfection.

lol, Erbe's posts do resonate with me often. It's interesting to hear your perspective, shows how people can see things differently. I wouldn't be surprised if, functionally, this complex does indeed contain excellent office infrastructure. The exterior composition is IMO, overwhelming. The developers could have broken up the massing into discrete portions that didn't appear so massive. But I do understand that a lot of people appreciate massive buildings. They don't always become part of the city very well, though. The old WTC was offputting, as an example. I do see that the developers of Hudson Yards are doing a better job in this regard.

Personally I've always loved cities that have both beautiful historical districts and squeaky clean modern office districts - which NYC does to the max - because only having both of those gives me the full "big city feeling." My favourite this side of the Atlantic is Amsterdam (a lot more so than London, even), because of its stunningly beautiful historical city center and extremely sleek, modern and clean business districts. So for me, what you prefer has its place in big cities I love, but the modern office contrast is equally important to me to get the feeling I love about the cities.

(Disclaimer: This post is a simplification of my views. There are of course more than just those two elements that are important to a big city. I named only those two because we were comparing them in this short discussion.)

Always thought this tower was average, but from this viewpoint, it looks quite stunning,

The limestone on this building brings a much needed warmth to the whole complex that I really enjoy. I love all the glass, don't get me wrong, but I really enjoy how the facade on this building utilizes traditional materials while still managing to look stunningly minimalist.

I agree with you. It´s also nice that 55 is black, and that 15 has the nice patterns at the base floors. Hopefully phase 2 won´t have too many blue glass towers.
