I've long been intrigued by abandoned subways and looked into the Detroit mystery subway while working on my web site on the subject (www.hiddensubways.com). I was unable to find anything substantiable, but if anyone here knows something I don't, I am all ears. Or mostly anyway.

Also, there is an abandonded rail tunnel connecting Detroit with Windsor but it was part of the commuter rail network and never was a subway.
One is 2nd avenue and Pilgrim Street, the other 2nd Avenue and Courtland Street. They are pretty far north in the City, but they're plainly visible in Google street view.

Out of curiosity I looked at 2nd avenue from just north of downtown up to where these structures are; it's definitely wide enough for a subway for the most part, and there's one intersection that crosses at an odd angle, which looks like an old streetcar junction (which shoots down the subway idea to be sure), but no other telltales that I could see. Moreover, 2nd avenue runs right through Ford's HQ campus, and I'm SURE Henry Ford and his successors would've shot down any subway running through his factory!

CURIOSI-D: Why Doesn’t Detroit Have A Subway Or Elevated Rail?

Bus Rapid Transit may be in Detroit’s future, but elevated rail or a subway probably are not. In this episode of WDET’s Curiosi-D, listener Andrew Parkanzky of Troy asked why there is no subway or elevated transportation in Detroit, and whether it was determined before or after the rise of the auto industry[...]

I remember reading there was a plan for a Detroit Subway as late as the early 1980s, but it's probably never going to happen now.

Detroit has just over half a million People in it and it is completely broke. Also the whole area is just suburban except for downtown which is also pretty empty.
In an alternate universe I would love to see a metro going under the Detroit River to Windsor. Those two cities should be more connected.

Looks like a paper magnetic ticket. They're still commonly used for single fares in many systems around the world.
