If this goes up easily and quickly, and looks as good as those renders show, it could mean a massive boom in skyscrapers!

Seems to be moving slowly but the concept is revealing itself.

Barclays Center to Sprout a Sound-Absorbing Green Roof

The arena pictured with phased Atlantic Yards development

Quote:
The logo-emblazoned roof of the Barlcays Center is going from white to green. The Journal reports that the arena's developer, Forest City Ratner, is bringing back a plan to cover the top of the structure with a 130,000-square-foot green roof. When the first designs for the arena were unveiled more than a decade ago, a lushly planted roof was part of the project, but the feature was cut to save money. But now that the first residential tower of Atlantic Yards is underway, Forest City resurrected the plan in part because it will make the apartments overlooking the arena more marketable—gazing down upon a grassy lawn will be much more pleasing than looking at a bright white and blue bank logo. Ultimately, three of the 15 Atlantic Yards towers will be built directly beside the Barclays Center.

The green roof, currently being designed by SHoP Architects, will also help to muffle loud concerts, though Forest City says that sound reduction did not drive their decision in bringing back the roof. That said, Barclays has been hit with multiple noise complaints from loud concerts; last year, the arena was fined $3,200 after a Swedish House Mafia concert.

Condemnations near Barclays start Atlantic Yards’ next phase

Quote:
The start of the condemnation process for a group of buildings near Barclays Center offers some hints about how Atlantic Yards construction could progress.

The gears are moving to clear three homes and three businesses along Sixth Avenue between Dean Street and Atlantic Avenue. Empire State Development told the Atlantic Yards Report the condemnations will allow work to move forward at the L Island Railroad Yard and the site of a planned 272-foot tower on Sixth Avenue between Dean and Pacific streets.

The Report speculates that the condemnation is moving forward because Forest City Ratner needs additional staging for construction on the arena block. That claim was not be confirmed.

Eminent domain is already approved for the properties, but the state has yet to make an offer, according to Atlantic Yards Report.
Clearance will be at 6th & Dean St. Earlier model below (Gehry) along with more recent density study and map:

Construction Update: Atlantic Yards B2 Tower

Quote:
After significant delays, reader-submitted photos show that construction appears to be picking up at the first Atlantic Yards residential tower, dubbed B2. The structure was designed by SHoP, and Forest City Ratner is developing.

Atlantic Yards To Build More Affordable Housing Much Sooner

Quote:
The neighbors and the city have had enough, so developers of the Atlantic Yards megaproject just agreed to a new timeline that would deliver affordable housing units to the area sooner. The Times has the scoop, and all the juicy details. Specifically, 11 years after the whole project kicked off, Forest City Ratner has formally—like, in an actual agreement with the state, with the risk of a $5 million fine if they don't follow it—agreed to speed up construction. It all means Ratner has to put up 2,250 affordable apartments by 2025, which is a decade ahead of schedule. Norm Oder, maybe this new plan will placate you.

Essentially, seeing Barclays Center open with blockbuster fanfare while work on the first residential tower beside the arena, the modular-ly constructed B2, has been pretty glacial. (That building is set to include 363 apartments, 181 of which will be affordable.) Neighbors have banded together to complain about rising rents in the area and there have been more than a few lawsuits; this agreement, in fact, includes a provision that seven community groups not formally file one they had planned. Elected officials, for their part, saw the agreement as a prime chance to extract more affordable housing, delivered quicker, from the megaproject. That's especially crucial for Mayor Bill de Blasio, who's made biiiig promises in that arena.

Here's another reason it's all happening: a new investor who can infuse the project with some serious cash. Chinese firm Greenland Holding Group is buying a 70-percent stake in the project for $200 million. They will cover 70 percent of the costs going forward, and are hell-bent on finishing the whole shebang in a mighty speedy eight years.

Looks like they've managed to add a couple floors in the last month or so. Slowest development in NY....

PS: you can see the weathering steel is already staining some of the glass.... Barclays could look like shit in a few years without constant upkeep.

With the rebranding, the building currently in construction, B2, will be called 461 Dean.

Atlantic Yards Rebrands As Pacific Park, Reveals Next Building

http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2014/0...t_building.php
Quote:

Atlantic Yards is shedding its past. In 2003, Forest City Ratner created the megaproject moniker when the developer announced its plans to build 16 towers and a new basketball arena over 22 acres in Brooklyn. Now, eleven years later, with the arena open, one tower rising, and a plan to fast track the remaining 15 buildings, Forest City is ditching its original name and rebranding the project as Pacific Park. In an interview Friday, Forest City CEO and President MaryAnne Gilmartin said that the new name coincides with a new phase of the project, with work moving "from pre-development to vertical." While the development will forever be known as Atlantic Yards—there is a movie about it, after all—Pacific Park will be the new community that's being built. Probably doesn't hurt that a new name also sloughs off associations with past lawsuits, controversies over eminent domain, and visceral community opposition. Forest City is also bringing on a new architect, COOKFOX.
Quote:
Greenland Forest City Partners, the official name of the joint development, hired the sustainable building experts at COOKFOX to design the next two buildings, which will sit beside a new park. The first building to to begin work will be 535 Carlton Avenue. Thankfully, the rebranding also drops the completely confusing "B" numbering system and gives the buildings real addresses, a fact that COOKFOX partner Rick Cook said was "extremely important" to his studio. "We want these to be urban buildings, not towers in a park
They will break ground on december on the new 535 Carlton (former B14) a 285,000-square-foot building with 18 stories and 298 units up to three bedrooms

After that, work will begin on 550 Vanderbilt (former B11) with 275 units up to four bedrooms.

A new 8-acre park called Pacific Park will be build along the new buildings, part of Pacific street will be demaped for this park, hence the name.

Those two buildings will be built on terrafirma, and the platform for other phases must be build by 2017 (according to the agreement)

By june 2015 they expect to break ground on 30 sixth avenue (former B3) of 300 units by SHoP Architects.

Quote:
But Forest City isn't giving up on modular. "It is my great hope that we will use it again in Pacific Park," said Gilmartin, but she also noted that "it's an ongoing experiment" that "needs to be validated with a standing building."

It's the dumbest, most head scratching name change I can think of. Atlantic Yards fits... Pacific Park sounds like a West coast suburban shore community.
