Even the officials didn't know what would happen! But everything went well and Kochi metro continues its journey as one of the most well executed large scale projects in the state! The pilot run actually extended to beyond even premier junction rather than SCMS as reports had suggested. The crowd that gathered was not very large and were mostly commuters, as the pilot run was a surprise announcement today noon! This was one great surprise anyway!

Attaching a few pictures i clicked.

Yet another iconic day for Kochi Metro! The second stage trial run was completed successfully along the 6 K.M. Muttom - Edappally viaduct! The rolling stock plied on the stretch 3 times to and forth without any glitches at all! It reached a speed of 30 KMPH in the final run. The trial run was conducted with 40 passengers aboard including KMRL MD Elias George and DMRC Project Manager. Hopes of metro starting operations on Kerala Piravi day this year are highly likely now!

Aluva Station Designs

The largest metro station in Kochi - The Aluva station - designs are finally published and oh boy! this seems to be the most grand of all the stations. It is baseed on our state's natural beauty and there seems to be a lot of glass featured. This is also the most detailed design renderings they have published till now. The level of detail given to each and every element seems to be absolutely impressive! This is actually unreal comparing with what Kochi had till now. This in itself will become a landmark in Kochi!

I really think Kochi Metro has the best stations in all of India. Have not seen so much design detailing in any other metro. Just hope Kochi's other infrastructure is also upgraded to match our metro.

Also, ironically, comparing Aluva's other stations, that is, Private bus station, KSRTC stand and Railway station to the metro station will leave a person in total shock seeing the stark contrast!

I don't understand the reason for short trains for huge cities in India, especially because the majority of those systems are overground. Longer underground stations increase costs, but for longer overground stations additional cost is minimal.

Kochi is a small city by Indian standards.

Kochi's metro has been a godsend in improving traffic along the main road but its reach is not large enough yet

Kochi Metro Reach 2 commences operation

Kochi Metro Reach 2 map by source - The Metro Rail Guy, on Flickr

Quote:
Kerala’s Chief Minister and India’s Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs inaugurated the new 5 km Palarivattom – Maharaja’s College section of the city’s 27.5 km Line-1 on October 4.

Construction on this section was carried out by Larsen & Toubro (Package KC-03, CUSAT – JLN Stadium) and Soma Enterprise (Package KC-03, JLN Stadium – Ernakulum South). Trial runs (testing) started on July 14 during which a train was operated manually to check its interaction with the line’s civil structure.
Signalling tests on Alstom’s Urbalis 400 communications-based train control (CBTC) system began on August 26 and were completed in under 2 weeks.
This was followed by a 2-day inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) who’s approval was received shortly after.

With this new extension on Banerjee Road and MG Road, Line-1’s operational length has become 18.2 km (Aluva – Maharaja’s College) with 5 new stations at JLN Stadium, Kaloor, Lisie, MG Road and Maharaja’s College.

Commercial operations started Oct 4 at 6 am using 9 Alstom Metropolis trains (with another 2 on standby) at a headway of 10 minutes.
Kochi Metro hasn’t yet updated its fare chart, but the maximum price is said to be fixed at Rs 50.
Ridership averaged 30,000/day in September and the KMRL is hopeful that it’ll soon touch 75,000/day.

With the opening of this new stretch, just another 9.3 km of Line-1’s route (see map) is pending between Maharaja’s College – Tripunithura in Phase 1.
That section is expected to open only in or after 2019.

Kochi Metro to propose a new light metro corridor for Fort Kochi

As integrated plan, KMRL suggest two DRT corridors, one Light metro corridor apart from transit intregration and Phase 2 of Metro.

The vision: Ring in a green living environment. The aim: Switch to electric mobility and reduce air pollution. The immediate plan: Encourage commuters to opt for the public transport system.

Kochi is set to establish a transport network integrating rail, road and water transport with stress on an electric mode of operation. The success of Kochi Metro - which has changed the perception of public transport in the city by providing a convenient and dignified mode of mass transit - has prompted the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) to submit a proposal to the state government for the introduction of a 10.1-km-long Light Metro corridor connecting Ernakulam and Fort Kochi.

The development of two Dedicated Rapid Transit (DRT) systems to improve connectivity is part of the plan. According to sources, the Light Metro project is likely to be included in the Governor's speech in the Budget session of the state Assembly. The plan is to encourage commuters to switch over to the public transport system and thus ensure quality air and a better living environment for the city dwellers.

The state can avail of the Green Urban Mobility Fund offered by the Centre under the National Urban Transport Policy for bringing in a revolution in the public transport system, said KMRL urban transport division additional general manager G P Hari at a consultative meeting on improving air quality in Kochi. The meeting was organised by the City Corporation in association with NGO Clean Air Asia and French auto parts manufacturer Faurecia."The registration process of the Metropolitan Transport Authority will be completed by the end of December.

We had submitted an application for development of two DRT corridors last week. The second proposal is the development of a 10.1-km-long Light Rail transit system between Ernakulam city and Fort Kochi. For the first time in the country, we are making autorickshaws a part of the urban mobility system. Electric autorickshaws will pick up the passengers from home and drop them at the boarding point of the public transport network. The Kochi Metro card can be used for using autorickshaws also," he said.

"We have submitted a proposal for the preparation of a detailed project report on the Light Rail transport system in the city. The plan is to operate the service between Goshree and Fort Kochi connecting Vypeen. Another proposal is to conduct a feasibility study for the development of two Dedicated Rapid Transit systems in line with the Ahmedabad BRT corridor. The first one is a 52-km Bus Express corridor connecting Kodungallur and Eramalloor. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 728.42 crore. While the average construction cost of the Metro rail is Rs 210 crore per km, the DRT can be developed at an expense of Rs 14.11 crore per km," said a KMRL official.

According to Hari, the main aim is to switch to electric mobility and reduce the air pollution levels in the city. "The use of public transport stands at 45 per cent in Kochi city and the figure is reducing at the rate of 2-3 per cent per year. The increase in the number of private vehicles has led to traffic congestion and sharp rise in air pollution. We are launching the Water Metro with 78 boats this year. It will provide transportation facility for 25,000 people per day," he added.

Mayor Soumini Jain, Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development director C Rajan, Nansen Environmental Research Centre scientist G Bindu and Cusat School of Environmental Studies director Rajathy Sivalingam participated in the meeting.
