Almost makes me jealous because we had planned extensions in Miami, Florida for about the same length as the system Chennai is building (117 km ) yet you are building a system for $2.3 billion USD yet our expansion here would have cost $17 billion USD!
Anyways congratulations to Chennai!
The indian costs it's so much cheap because the indian worker don't have the similar rights than in the occidental world.

Perhaps, but Indian unions are equally if not more militant than those in the West, so it's not easy to get stuff done like in China or the Middle East. Also land acquisition is extraordinarily complicated in India. It's impressive to get something like this done cost effectively in India.

If Indian cities were laid out like American cities with broad 6-8 lane roads everywhere, they'd be building these metros non-stop there down the medians.

Indians aren't Pakistanis - I read a comparison between India/China which showed than while Chinese were paid a higher wage, companies found of easier to work in China over India due to stricter labor laws enforced by state governments.

As someone who has travelled extensive lay across China in my childhood but has never been to India, I think India lacks a coordinated efforts to improve public infrastructure such as HSR or sanitation. China is so clean and organized in comparison!

If I am not mistaken, Chennai is one of a handful of Indian cities attempting to improve transport infrastructure. I have heard about investment into a monorail, airport, MRT, BRT, Ferries and even HSR. I hope you guys move in the right direction.

Chennai becomes sixth Indian city with metro railway
29 June 2015

Chennai is the sixth Indian city to have the metro

A metro rail service has been launched in the southern Indian city of Chennai, making it the sixth Indian city to get the service

The 10km (6.2-mile) stretch of elevated track has seven stations and connects Alandur to Koyambedu.

The journey takes 15 minutes - the metro is expected to ease traffic congestion.

The construction is part of a proposed 45km (27-mile) network which is due to be completed by 2015

I am glad that you commented back. It is irritating to see comments that belittle others for no apparent reason. People should have the maturity to handle valid criticism and also to present ones own strengths without needing to downgrade others.

Thanks for updated map. The red line Alandur to Koyambedu 10 KM stretch was opened today.Green line Chennai Beach to Velacherry 20KM is operation. Total length in operation - 30KM.

Velacherry-St.Thomas mount 5KM green line is expected to start operation by 2018. This part is owned by Indian railways and conventional Indian standard MRTS and not modern Metro.

Red part Koyambedu to Chennai Central 12KM, Blue part Wimco Nagar to Chennai International Airport 32KM is slated to open by 2016.

By 2018, total KM in operation would be 79KM (Metro+MRTS). It is to be noted that Chennai Metropolis have 300KM+ strong suburban network in north, west and south direction.
