How About 1 Card for All Local Commute?

CHENNAI: Trying to have exact change every time you travel by an MTC bus, and the conductor giving you grief because you didn’t, is stressful. So how about simply swiping a card, just like your debit or credit card, to pay the fare for commute? And a single card for all modes of public transport such as the suburban trains, MTC services and the metro rail? Sounds ambitious, doesn’t it?

Well, that seems to be the plan for the Union Ministry of Urban Development — the National Common Mobility Card. After considering the challenges of creating a single travel card across the country, it is learnt that the union ministry is studying the most popular type of card — London’s Oyster card.

The concept is simple. A commuter just has to pay and buy a card with a magnetic strip just like your debit or credit card with stored money value. He can swipe it at the machines in different public transport modes — from buses to Metro rail — and pay the fares. But as simple as it sounds from this side of the spectrum, an array of agencies must come together to make this happen and they have to grapple with the technological and procedural complications that come with such an enormous network of payments.
It is learnt the Ministry of Urban Transport has convened a couple of meetings recently, in which Chennai Metro officials also participated to deliberate the issues and challenges in conceiving a national mobility card. According to sources, the Oyster card is being studied as a model for creating a national card. Highly placed sources said the government is considering the common mobility cards to have a stored offline value.

According to National Payment Corporation of India, the Reserve Bank of India has relaxed the authentication mandate for contactless transaction up to `2,000. The card can be Europay, MasterCard or Visa (EMV) card which is a global standard for inter-operation of integrated circuit cards.

But before the technical specification of card is worked out, the prominent stakeholders — the banks — need a business model to be worked out. That it’s a challenge to make it operational is an understatement, as it requires enormous back-end integration.

Chennai’s Universal Card

■ While at the national level, the Centre is taking steps for a common mobility card, the Chennai Metro Rail has also been mooting the idea

■ Chennai Metro rail has designed a universal card that can accommodate payment for 30 agencies and can be used in various public transport systems in the city

■ Accommodating MTC and Southern railways, which run the suburban services, remains a challenge due to lack of adequate infrastructure

■ Chennai is looking at Kochi Metro Rail model under which the investment of the entire funding required for the automated fare collection system for Metro will be undertaken by the bank, which will pay royalty

After opening metro in Kolkata (my city) in 1984, in Delhi (our country capital) in 2002, in Bengaluru in 2011, in Mumbai in 2014, in Jaipur in 2015, this year metro opened in Chennai, the sixth city which opened metro.

This is a very old city, and also very congested. It is famous for many tourist attractions, so the crowd is mixed with inhabitants and tourists. Metro is a good solution for traffic jam.

Chennai metro follows Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur metro, because, it uses overhead wire. The rolling stock is looking very good, the blue colour reminds sky.

I heard Chennai is also constructing a monorail network, but it will be not much usefull, because metro is much faster, higher capacity. Many monorail systems has closed in past, remember last in Sydney. This is because maintenance is much higher. So I think it will be better to construct more metro lines.

The worst thing is the high fare. This is the most costly metro in India, where fare leaping just one or two stations as touble or triple. Why they are creating such abnormal pressure on the middle-class people? This is completely injustice to the, I strongly protest this. No other metro system in India behaves like this. It looks that metro is the transportation of rich class.

I’ve some questions (arose after viewing some websites). Please answer one by one –

1) Left side, right side or both sides, - which type of platforms are in most numbers in Chennai subway network?
2) Which is the highest of Chennai metro?
3) Which is the busiest metro station?
4) When the digging of ground for pillaring started, was the former track which was closed in 1955 excavated under road surface?

Chennai is seventh. Gurgaon Rapid Metro operation began in November 2013 and is fourth in the chronological order.

Hence Gurgaon is a satellite township of Delhi, I'm not counting Gurgaon separately, also Gurgaon is connected by metro with Delhi, so it is a type of extended city.

Already they have planned long term plan. Line 2 will be extended both in east and south; the eastern extension will be fully underground. It will touch the suburban rail network at both terminal points. The partly elevated line 1 is also under construction. It will run from north-east to south-west, and will touch and cross line 1 at two points, and the south-east bound suburban rail line also. It will also touch the suburban rail network at both terminal points, and will also cross the east bound and south-west bound suburban rail line at two points.

Gurgaon is not a townshp, jeez.. it's a satellite city of Delhi and has two metro systems, Delhi Metro and Rapid Metro. They are not the same, one is OHE and the other third rail operated by separate companies.
