The metro has started test-running direct service from Koyambedu to the airport, with passengers onboard. On this service, passengers do not have to change trains at Alandur.

In other news, the tunnel boring machine has made a successful breakthrough at Central station in downtown Chennai.

The jugaad that can change Chennai roads.

Considering how Chennai used to be the city ringing with bicycle bells and the large public bus infrastructure we already have, this possible 'jugaad' can be a big step towards a greener future.

For more details..

Chennai Metro is the latest metro of India. Although it is new, but its progress is fast, and within a year, it currently has 2 lines— 1 & 2. It is also the most costly metro in India, so I doubt how much it will be utilized by ordinary people. It is the first ordinary metro (non-express) of India which has connected the airport. For this reason the Alandur station area has an covered elevated stretch. No other metros in India has till now such covered track area. Is this for precaution from air crash?

Chennai is the first city, whose metro lines are pre-planned, and opening dates may be shuffled, I,e. line 2 has been opened before line 1.

After reading many websites I’ve recently saw some matters, which arise some questions and curiosity. Here I’m writing.

1) Line 1 is being extended up-to Wimconagar. It will then meet again with line 2 at Chennai Central station. So in future there will be two routes between Chennai Central and Alandur, one by line 1, another by line 2. Obviously line 1 is shorter. It will be a very important line with many interchanges with suburban train network. Peoples who will come from Vijaywada could get down at Wimconagar, and could take metro to reach city center, and airport more fast, and the pressure of suburban rail will also be low by this. The entire line was planned to complete in December 2019, is it true? Has the construction started?

2) Line 2 is also being extended up-to Chennai Central. I think this line will be busier than line 1, because, this line will serve those areas where transportation is not so good, also Chennai Central Egmore (or Engshumbur) —both stations will be connected by this line. Both are very important railway stations with both suburban and express trains. So pressure to metro will be obviously increase after completion of this line. Has the construction started? When this extension will be opened for public?

3) Is there any system for baggage checking when entering in the station area or platform area?

4) Is drinking water available in station area?

5) Are there any display board in platform about next train? If yes, what kind of it—dot matrix or LED?

6) Do they play light music in background at station platforms?

7) Do all stations has side platforms? Or some has island platforms or both side platforms?

8) Is there any special seats for children, ladies, senior citizens and handicapped persons in both platform and inside the metro cars?

9) Is there any entertainment television in platforms?

10) Is photography allowed inside station premises?

11) What kind of fare it is used for, single, return and multiple journey tickets?

12) Do they have all day ticket system i.e. unlimited journey on any metro routes for a day?

Chennai Metro-MRTS merger report in six months
Consulting firm to look at various related issues

In six months, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) will be ready with a plan for the merger of Chennai Metro Rail and Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). But the merger could take at least three years.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), PwC was appointed as a consultant for this merger sometime ago to look at various issues including operations and the fate of MRTS employees.

After the merger, the air-conditioned trains of Chennai Metro Rail will eventually replace the existing MRTS trains. The consultant will have to chalk out a detailed operation plan. “The fares of MRTS too may be hiked to match that of Chennai Metro Rail,” an official said. Chennai Metro Rail fares are quite high in the range of Rs. 10-60 whereas the MRTS charges only Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 depending on the distance. The study will also look at how the CMRL staff can be trained after the merger. “Immediately after the merger or, eventually, the employees of MRTS may go back to Southern Railways and not be a part of this system. The consultant will work out the modalities for the same,” a CMRL official said.

PwC will assess the MRTS passenger demand and also the ownership of assets of MRTS that will be transferred to CMRL post merger. It will develop a terminal facility for MRTS at the Fort Station with the available State government land.
