Philly is gonna join the Supertall club! Woo hoo!

Seriously though I'm distracted by all the construction around University City, across the Schuykill River where I live, that has cranes everywhere. Highrise buildings like the 49 story and 33 story towers of Cira Center South, buildings at Market St. and 38th, Chestnut Street and 38th, the new Drexel University building at 34th and Lancaster Avenue, Market at 36th Street, new dorms for Penn at 34th and Chestnut, etc., etc.

Philly's University City has the appearance of a "boom town."

Looks like they finished the east side of the perimeter with the pilings. the hole is also getting deeper where they were finished with the retaining walls.

Very very nice!

I had no idea Philly was getting a supertall! Well done!

According to Wikipedia New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, and Los Angeles currently have 1,000 ft plus buildings... San Francisco and Philadelphia will soon join this club with towers under construction (Los Angeles will have a second supertall soon also). Very exciting!

^

Keep in mind Philly already has the 297 meter tall original Comcast Center, which is just 3 meters shy of being considered a "supertall."

I walked by the site the other day they not only fenced off the area but put green stuff woven into the chain link fence so it's difficult to look into the construction site. By eyeballing gaps in the fence I could determine the site is deeply excavated with large trucks down there in what appears a huge city block size bath-tub.

Question:

At what point does a building move from "proposed" and "prep" to Under Construction???

Inquiring minds want to know!

A building will be changed to U/C status once foundation work has officially began, which is usually indicated by signs of rebar.

Once the caissons are sunk it's U/C. And yes, the rebar mat truly seals that deal.

Comcast chooses firm to design interior of new Philadelphia skyscraper

Architectural firm Gensler has been selected to design the interiors of the new Comcast Innovation and Technology Center.
Gensler is collaborating with Foster + Partners, which designed the structure, as well as Daroff Design Inc., a Philadelphia architectural firm. The goal is to create a “functional, aesthetic, sustainable and progressive interior environment that will effectively integrate with the architectural design of the building,” the firm said in a statement.
The $1.2 billion building at 18th and Arch streets in Philadelphia is under construction and is expected to be completed by early 2018. The structure will house NBC10 and Telemundo. It will also include space that promotes and innovation as well as areas for product testing and tech startups.
Liberty Property Trust of Malvern, Pa., is constructing the building.
