In conversations around town I am encountering the usual comments about the height: "The architect is cheating! That thing on top of the building (we can't call it a 'spire' ... I've heard some refer to it as a 'blade') was put there just so can be over 1000 feet tall!"

Well, people are usually easily fooled, yet they´re not falling for this one.

I hate spires unless they look natural with the building, like the Empire state building or chrysler building. Let's see how this turns out

I totally agree.
Examples of bad spires to me are on top of the Willis tower and John Hancock Center.

Don't forget the one on WTC1! It doesn't blend with the design of the building at all and just looks like something that was stuck on top which it actually was.

I don't give a shit about the height or the spire, I like the building, let them argue about roof heith or pinacle height somewhere else.

Such a nice location. A great tower for Philly.

One thing I think buildings with spires should follow is that they must be the tallest building around and then use a spire to gain extra height otherwise it looks awkward and out of place, I am disappointed that this building had a great chance to surpass Comcast center roof height, but it didn't.
